The Case of the Golden Idol is a very cool game that I recommend, but seeing it ranked as the #3 GotY threw me for a loop

Anyone here familiar with Signalis? I know they were working on a patch to make item management easier. Was wondering if they added that option yet.

Yesss Pokemon Legends Arceus in the top ten and Scarlet and Violet at the back of the bus. Also I think this list is filled with some damn good games and people are crazy. Good year. Not a legendary year or anything, but solid as hell.

Also Tunic wayyy too low. If Tunic's not in your top 10, your list is wrong. Going back to playing Tinykin now!

Yeah I'm surprised by how low Tunic is on the list, it's one of the games I've played this year that really stood out. I think it'll stay with me for longer than Golden Idol though both are good

Signalis was awesome. Not sure if I had the patch or not honestly but I never had a problem with the item management either way.

i like vampire survivors but i think part of it's appeal factor is its like, a 3$ game you get because everyone's playing it and then you start it and you're like "oh wow this is actually pretty cool" and get addicted to it

which i think is a different starting expectation than like "oh this is the 3rd best game of the year?!". like, don't go into this expecting the 3rd best gaming experience you'll have all year! it's a cool game but like idk if you should be going in expecting "something 2 spots away from being as good as elden ring"

An exact repeat of 2019 when Sekiro won GOTY from a western outlet. The only difference this year is that God of War might give it a run for its money.

Also Holocure is much better than Vampire Survivors and that game is free.

As usual any 'of the year' list released before the end of said year is invalid! Though it is useful to get new games on my radar that I'd never heard of- in this case PlateUp!, Raft, Perfect Tides, Rollerdrome, and... Poinpy.

Well that is why there are a good number of 2021 games here. They werent played before the last list was finalised. I think second half of December or early January is ideal for GOTY deliberations. Unfortunately if you are a publication with a large staff in an office that can be hard.

  • I've only heard of 28 out of those 50 games, which sounds pretty low to me.


  • Season games like Fortnite and League of Legends should absolutely not be included in a Game of the Year list, They weren't released in 2022. If the list is "Best games you played in 2022", then any game made by or before 2022 should be eligible.
  • I thought MH Rise Sunbreak was just DLC - not a full game?
  • I own a whole Two games off of that list (Xenoblade 3 & TMNT: Shredder's Revenge)
  • There are about 7 or 8 other games on that list that I am interested in.
  • That means 80% of that list are games I either never heard of or have no interest in. That seems like an incredibly lackluster year to me.

I kinda get it from the perspective of the fact that they're ongoing games that are consistently adding stuff, but it's hard for me to imagine that anything Fortnite or LoL added in specifically 2022 is all that spectacularly worthy of a GOTY mention

Putting League and Fortnite on here is pretty terrible. I guess the main reason for Fortnite is the no-build mode? That does fundamentally change the game for a lot of people.

Idk, there are a lot of indie bangers this year, and about 8-10 games on this list I want to start or return to. Citizen Sleeper and NORCO are excellent, I'm having a good time with Pentiment so far. Immortality was also great, way too low on this list but I suppose an FMV game about movies is too niche even for indie game enthusiasts.

edit: It does feel a little cheesy to see stuff like Fortnite, Marvel Snap, and Vampire Survivors in the top 10 but I think that's more of an indication with how people are interacting with games these days than an indictment. That kind of GAAS comfort game you keep returning to is a big deal. It's kinda alluded to in the writeups and Polygon did a whole video on it recently too so it's not surprising.

Tunic is probably my GOTY (Elden Ring is #2) so weird seeing it that low

Immortality also feels like it should be higher than #50

Yeah I dont think this was a weak year. It might have been a weak year for AAA releases but even those seemed better than last year. However I actually didnt play that many games due to some games being extremely long and a lot of other stuff going on. There are definitely a lot of games that seem cool that I just didnt get around to.

You should all play Immortality though, theres a cool game thats not absurdly long!

I also played Bayonetta 3. I'm behind in the Xenoblade series, so I want to do all that before I get to 3 (which will take a while to say the least, lol). But yeah, I didn't play that many new games this year. Kind of still want to play Pentiment, Tunic, and Vampire Survivors, but we'll see, there are also games in my backlog and replays I want to do, so I might just do that instead.
