this is like almost every time I go without my wife lol. She never believes it.

Idk if its because I walk fast and I was wearing a mask because I left the hospital. But I got a bag of dog/cat food. As Im leaving, by the entrance/exit, all my wheels locked up on my shopping cart.But Im in a hurry so I just picked up the fucking shopping cart like Frank West and walked out lol.

I took 5 steps and got ambushed by two employees with a remote in their hand. One was trying to distract me about the wheels while the other one checked my receipt and items.

I was like, you guys really think Im shoplifting? And they just walked away without even responding.

What you need to do is stop shopping there.

Make it as awkward as possible for them. Play the race card, doesn't matter what your colour is or theirs is. Play it.

Reminds me of the time this one annoying security guard kept following me at the LCBO thinking I was up to no good. What was so infuriating about it was how obvious they were making it.

Big unbagged items tend to be stopped at the door. Just have your receipt ready, and if your cart locks up, then just wait.

It's the same concept, though. Maybe it would help if you didn't try to carry the whole cart with you after the wheels locked? That doesn't exactly look... not suspicious, you know?

When someone checks my receipt, that's the last time I shop there. I'm not gonna be treated like a fucking criminal.

Its not. Im already in the parking lot, 10 feet from my car. Thats way different than just checking for a receipt. They couldve just asked me at the self check out lane

The market I use used to put a sticker on large items. I dont know why they stopped.

If you're outside just ignore them and keep going. They can't actually stop you.

Just be aware that one of the most popular ways of stealing from a big store is to walk in with a cart, load up the cart, and just walk out the door as if you bought everything. Happened a lot at the Dollar General my brother worked at. Happened to me when I worked at Target.

That kind of thing is why those wheel-stop devices were installed in the first place. You shouldn't take it personally. If you have a receipt, just show the receipt. It's a ten second delay at the most. It's really nothing to get outraged over, they're just told to look out for certain signs--and a big item in a cart with no bag is one of those signs. Fast walking is probably another. A mask and a hoodie probably doesn't help, either.

If you fit the profile, it's not your fault or the fault of the store--it's the fault of the thieves who wear masks/hoodies and walk out the door quickly with a cart full of unbagged goods.

The ones at the edge of the parking lot which are automatic, yes, those were installed because of people stealing carts. The ones that lock via remote inside the store were installed to prevent people from walking out of the store with stolen goods. They're two slightly different solutions to two slightly different problems.

Sure, but not a cart full of heavy stuff. And yeah, walking out the door with stuff in your hand is another popular method of thievery. Harder to prevent, but also less impactful per incident.

Locking a cart's wheels prevents the bigger thefts from taking place if you notice them heading out the door with a bunch of unbagged items.

It's just how things are nowadays. Thieves made it worthwhile for the store managers to heighten security. As a result, ordinary people who paid for their goods get occasionally inconvenienced. It's just part of the way things are--so if you get stopped, just show your receipt. Happens to me sometimes, too. It's really not a big deal.

To be fair, if a guy who literally picked up his cart and walked off with it after I locked the cart wheels looked at me and said "Did you really think I was shoplifting?" I'd be pretty speechless, too.

Those carts lock up automatically if the sensors by the door detect unbagged large items. They use a remote to unlock the carts. I don't think it's you being targeted, unlike in Walmart where they ask to see receipts for some but not everybody.

See and I can agree and believe this. But I have a lot of pets on a big property. I go there frequently during the week to buy heavy litters, dog food bags, bird food, cat food. This is the first time this has ever happened in 2 years that Ive been going there. never seen this happen to anyone else either

According to what another person in the thread said, it's equally likely that the wheels were locked automatically by a sensor as he passed the door.

Either way, it's literally the smallest conceivable inconvenience to let someone check your receipt on the way out of the store. These near-minimum-wage employees don't need to be dealing with every customer's 'main character syndrome,' which seems to make people think they're the exception to the rules.

Just be cool, guys. It's not a big deal to show a receipt.
