I'm gonna separate it into regional and national dexes. And I'm just going off the GBA games only for the initial lists >_> I'll address the Gamecube stuff at the end.

Regional Dex:

1. Catch, evolve, and breed all the pokemon you can in your game (125/151)
2. Trade for the starters you didnt get: Bulbasaur line, Charmander line, Squirtle line (131/151)
3. Trade to get the evolutions of Alakazam, Gengar, Golem, and Machamp (135/151)
4. Trade for all the version exclusive pokemon in other remake (148/151)
5. Trade for all your choice pokemon in your save file: Omanyte line, Kabuto line (you can breed Eevee and Hitmons for different ones) (150/151)
6. Either hack, trade, or glitch Mew into your game >_> (151/151)

You have to do a minimum of 14 trades. Fuck, that's a lot of trading.

National Dex:

1. Catch, evolve, and breed the 45 Johto pokemon you can get (one will be a baby pre-evo from the other's exclusive you already have): (196/386)
2. Trade for the 7 exclusive Johto pokemon with the other version (203/386)
3. Trade for the evolutions of Politoed, Slowking, Steeliz, Scizor, Kingdra, and Porygon 2 (209/386)
4. Trade for the other 2 Legendary Beasts with other FireRed and LeafGreen versions (which require you to pick different starters and fully complete the entire game before the roaming pokemon are catchable. Also if the pokemon uses Roar on you, it glitches out and becomes uncatchable LOL) (211/386)
5. Breed 2 of the Hoenndex pokemon from Johto pokemon: Wynaut and Azurill (213/386)
6. Import the rest of the Johto and Hoenn pokemon from Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald (to get the Johto starters, you must complete the regional dex of Emerald and then choose 1. So you must complete that game 3 times to get all 3 LOL), also you have to trade Eevee over to RSE to evolve to Espeon and Umbreon because FR/LG doesn't have an ingame clock but RSE does lol (381/386)
7. Either hack, trade, or glitch for Ho-oh, Lugia, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys (386/386)

You have to do an additional minimum of 111 trades (including optimally trading new pokemon that would also evolve through trading). Fuck. That's a lot of trading.

Now there were 2 Gamecube games (Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness) that did come out to make it easier, such as having all the Johto starters and Johto beasts catchable (instead of literally going through the whole fucking GBA game to get 1 of them!), various Gen 1-3 pokemon, and Lugia and Ho-Oh as completion rewards. But obviously you need a GCN to GBA adaptor to access the pokemon.

Jirachi can be obtained from the American pre-order disc for Colosseum and Celebi can be obtained from the Japanese pre-order disc for Colosseum. Mew and Deoxys require event items that are no longer available. Ho-Oh and Lugia were also available in GBA events that are no longer available.

I've been trying to replay classic Pokemon games as an adult and I have no idea how people do it. It's so tedious and grindy.

Really? First I've ever heard of that happening. Fairly certain I got hit by it and could catch it just fine.

Fun fact - as mentioned, the 3 Johto roaming beasts have the chance to bug themselves out of existence if they use Roar. But for some reason they're also just bugged to have really shitty IVs. This comes up in competitive or Battle Frontier discussion sometimes because Suicine and Raikou are obviously really good and so this means if you want a super legit viable one then you need to get it from Colosseum.

Due to this, while the HP IV is unaffected, the Pokmon can only have a maximum Attack IV of 7, and the other four IVs will always be 0

Honestly, I still love playing Gen 1. I replay some version of RBY at least once a year

I had much more free time as a kid. My old Y cart has all 150 Pokmon (not dex entries, each Pokmon of each line). Never got Mew, sadly.

I must've mixed it up with Lati@s then (unless they were affected too? In which case I have absolutely no idea, I remember using Mean Look or something and feeling big brained, and then getting pissed when it used Roar instead lol)... that's what almost 20 years does to your memory I guess.

Lati@s don't have roar, but I imagine they would probably suffer the same glitch if they did.

The roaming beast in FRLG feels like it gets the least fanfare of any legendary I can think of.
Do they even announce that it's been running around like RSE have Latias/Latios on TV? I can't recall any NPCs caring and it's a Kanto game so the legendary themes barely register.

I swear you're just walking around and an Entei shows up and you casually go "Oh.", master ball him, nickname him Aloysius or Egbert or something then dump him in the PC forever. I mean you're not gonna train it up for the league rematches when you probably have a Mewtwo to carry you.
Entei fell a long way from that "Oh shit." moment in Colosseum very quickly.

Yeah it's a huge moment when you see Entei for the first time in Colosseum.

- First legendary you see (and can catch)
- For that point in the game, it being level 40 is pretty strong, and a lot more meaningful than Suicune and Raikou being level 40 when you later see them is
- There's a pretty likely chance most people ran through the gauntlet of battles beforehand without healing before the fight, so you're already kinda beaten up heading into it. Even if you know you can backtrack and heal, it's really annoying to do
- If you wanted to catch Entei in this battle instead of waiting for later, you need to deal with Dakim's stupid friendly fire earthquaking it while you're trying to catch it at low HP. So you probably reloaded to get Entei here quite a few times

Actually weirdly may be one of the most iconic moments in Colosseum

I dont think they even announce Entei when it shows up in FRLG. It just silently spawns when you beat Sevii Islands

a lot easier than the original experience.
