What is this weird need for From specifically to conform to the way most games do things? It's getting creepy, it's clearly just coming from Journalists salty that Miyazaki won't bend to their will and entitled, arrogant people who think they know better than the developers how their games should be. No, it has ways to work around not having a pause button, but that is not the same as having a pause button and frankly having to use workarounds just reinforces the idea that it should have a pause button. It's not even an issue of creativity, it is entirely a QoL feature

"Love it or leave it" is not a mentality anyone actually practices, so I don't know why it's trotted out here. I never see anyone defending any other game for missing standard QOL features or doing something you dislike with "Well that's how the developers made it so shut the fuck up and play something else!"

Maybe we should abolish review scores and the concept of critiquing a video game. Obviously the game wasn't for you if you can't accept it 100% as it was made.

And even the most pretentious art film could have some small objective issues that no movie in current year should have, like it's deafingly loud or they lock you in the theater when the showing starts.

This topic does confirm for me that Souls games has the most oddly defensive fan base I've ever seen. I know that every game has its defenders, but the way people defend these games is really something else. The games are great but not beyond criticism

My insane rant is only tangentially about the pause button, that's just another thing in the long list of things certain people have been complaining about since Demon's Souls, Miyazaki knows of these complaints and has said "no, fuck off" every time. Hence, still complaining about it now confuses me.

What it adds has already been pointed out by a couple users. It adds an element of tension and planning. You can't just pause for a rest in the middle of a boss fight. You need to get your character off the road or fast travel if you plan to step away. It adds the sense that the world is a more real place that can't be stopped, strengthening the immersion.

Yes, the value it adds is subjective but there is value in it otherwise no one would defend it. Sekiro did have a pause button and it definitely deflated the tension a bit when used but I didn't really mind it, so really even though it would have that effect I wouldn't really mind it TOO much tbh, I'm arguing more from the fact that this attitude (more from the game journalism end of things) makes it harder for developers in this industry to exercise creativity. elden ring was the top selling game of 2022. people didn't care about a pause button. anybody invested isn't going to not buy the dlc because pause button isn't there. we aren't simps, we just aren't incessant whiners about everything. there's a site of grace like every 15-20 minutes...pause there ffs. have you guys ever tried to enjoy things instead of looking for things to complain about?

even if you aren't near a site of grace how hard is it to clear a room and just stand in the corner? mobs have a limited scope of movement , they won't attack you if you aren't near their path

I can't comprehend being this upset about the game to complain this much. they were extremely generous with sites of grace for a reason. on top of that whenever I quit out of the game it loads me up exactly where I left off.

I just exit to the main menu if something comes up. It takes like less than a second to do, and the game auto saves a bunch so I start right where I left basically.
