rwlh: I did not finish this album. Specifically, I got up to the beginning of track 5. The singers voice was so unpleasant to me that it physically hurt to listen to. Apologies if you liked or nominated this - its just not for me.

Seanchan: I had such trouble ranking this one, and actually moved it further up after a re-listen. Thing is, this is my personal list and should reflect the fact that Ive continued to come back to this pop-punk album over the years. Is it as objectively good as some of the albums I have ranked below it? No. But this is one of those albums Ive heard so many times I cant help but start to sing along.

FoolFantastic: There were three albums in this set I outright disliked, compared to I believe one from the first 75 albums. So Long Astoria takes a genre I already don't care for, makes it as generic as possible, and tops it off by dragging on for over 50 minutes.

As usual, a low-ranking for me doesn't always indicate I hate or even dislike an album. It's a solid pop punk album with one of the best covers of all time on it if you ask me. As a singular listening experience, it wears thin but if sprinkled in a playlist, it's golden.

This was a lot of fun to compile! I don't often participate in the main topics, because for me at least ranking individual, often similar-sounding songs is tough. I found it much easier to rank all these albums against each other because they were so different, and I could take each album as a total experience.

I found a lot of great music, so thanks to you all for nominating it.

edit: So Long, Astoria was the only album of the 25 that I didn't finish.

Also, I knew 2 of the albums prior to this project, and 2 more I participated in their rankings. Everything else was new.

Favorite song: Its Gotta Be You

Seanchan: Better on a relisten than I remembered. Theres half or three quarters a decent/good pop album and then a bunch of snoozer tracks that bring it down.

FoolFantastic: I would rather leave the boy band era behind. Not a fan of even the 'best' songs here.

Figured The Ataris would clock in last based on the publicly submitted lists plus Fools dislike of pop punk, but damn!

BSB being near the bottom was inevitable as well.

My guess going in was that Green Day would take #1 easily but Im not so sure after seeing some of the lists. I think Tool is likely very high up as well. Maybe Black Sabbath as well.

Favorite song: You

Seanchan: (I Have No Idea - Punk Edition) Im probably repeating myself with what I said when we ranked the tracks, but while I generally like the soundscape here it all just gloms together in a way that makes this kind of forgettable overall. Not bad, just something thats hard to remember which tracks are which even a few days later..

FoolFantastic: My favorite new discovery of the batch, though also an album where I feel like ranking the tracks was to its detriment. Like many of the best punk albums, this is a singular burst of frantic energy better taken as a whole.

Easily the most pleasant surprise of the list. Seriously this might be the first time I have EVER enjoyed Christmas music. Big appreciation for whoever nominated this.
Favorite song: Angels We Have Heard On High

Seanchan: A solid Christmas album thats elevated for me by the addition of some great little holiday pop songs.

FoolFantastic: The general problem for me is that I have preferred versions of all the classics and I don't care for the originals.

The Ataris - every 25 albums there's only like 1 or 2 albums I actually don't enjoy at all. This was one of them.
Backstreet Boys - I mean I like them but I can totally get it not clicking for most
Bad Religion - alright but not very memorable
Lindsey Stirling - Stirling is incredible and is the only reason a christmas album didn't rank last for me

Hm ok, I guess I'll post my thoughts on the albums too.

So Long, Astoria: One of the two albums I never even planned a relisten of. I liked it most at its cutest, shaggiest, and least overtly punk, but that still wasn't saying much.
Millennium: To me, this was what Spice seemed to be to many of us: listenable, all-too-carefully commercially crafted dreck.
No Control: A pleasant surprise, probably in part because I never tried ranking its tracks. I found it considerably more propulsive, and the fairly punk-inherent aural repetition considerably less detrimental, than And Out Come the Wolves.
Warmer in the Winter: I actually like Christmas music in general, but the originals underwhelmed me and it overall just wasn't as compelling as I'd hoped.

Seanchan: LIked this metal album a little bit more on a relisten. When we did the track ranking, I think I said that the singing didnt match the instruments. I still think thats true but its not quite as bad as I remembered. The yelling/screaming parts are very grating but his regular tone is fine (though a far cry from the best in the genre).

I'm not all that into metal, so all the metal albums in this batch didn't thrill me, but one thing I appreciated was how they were all pretty different from each other. The albums by Protest the Hero and Sonata Arctica have very distinct sounds, for example. It was a neat to get sort of a metal sampler.

FYI, that was me who said that, not Fool.

I havent the diversity to be able to pin down metal to its smaller sub genres. When I think of amazing metal vocalists, Im thinking about Symphony X and Dream Theater. Which may not be fair because they might be the truly exceptional in the larger metal genre. Even less classically amazing vocalists, whether were talking Metallica or System of a Down or Avenged Sevenfold, have a sound that, for me, merges with the guitars, drums, etc.

With Protest the Hero, I was just struck by what, to my ears, sounded dischordant. Thats probably not the right musical term but I think you get the idea. It was so bizarre that it was hard for me not to focus on that. On the relisten it wasnt as bad, though that somewhat comes from knowing what Im going to hear.

FoolFantastic: Perfectly good electropop, but nothing here particularly wows me. IMO American Idiot, 10000 Days, and Black Sabbath are the shoo-ins, to the point where I almost expect them to be our top three. As for the other two, I'll guess jagged little pill and Rage Against the Machine.

Also, let's see here...

Palimpsest: I think its lyrics are very cleverly written, part of a meticulous narrative in general. To me, PtH are clearly good at switching up the tempo and delivery too, and each vocal song has a markedly memorable moment or two, but the sound here still isnt for me.
Sucker Punch: I was comparatively very positive during its week, but my relisten proved something of a comedown from that ceiling.
Rooms of the House: There's lots here I still don't get, but I've latched onto the parts that make me think of people I'm close to, and the intimate sentiment they carry with them.
Fever: Enjoyable enough but felt too workmanlike and nondescript to really stick with me, I guess.

Whoops I forgot to write the last two up:

La Dispute - Rooms of the House - Yeah, I said my big piece about it in the actual topic. This is an easy top 5 or 10 album for me. This thing DEVASTATES. Intergenerational trauma and detachment in the face of one's life crumbling around them is explored through powerful, dynamic, and propulsive rhythms that envelope the listener in every emotion, as Jordan's desperate vocals and vivid poetry brings to life equal parts horror, tragedy, and an attempt to find that shred of light to be able to move on. This album brings tears to my eyes and makes me think about my life in new ways each time, and even on a more visceral level, can be just plain fun to rock out to if you need that in your life.

Kylie Minogue - Fever - I'm actually a Kylie fan but more her earlier albums prior to Fever. Still a catchy, fun time, and Can't Get You Out of My Head is great.

rwlh: Very strong album with lots of variety.
Favorite song: Mount Harissa

Seanchan: (I Have No Idea - Jazz Edition) Im probably repeating myself with what I said when we ranked the tracks, but while I generally like the soundscape here it all just gloms together in a way that makes this kind of forgettable overall. Not bad, just something thats hard to remember which tracks are which even a few days later..

FoolFantastic: An absolutely outstanding jazz album and one I'm happy to have revisited after not paying it much attention before. Ellington paints such a strong image purely through sound.

FoolFantastic: This is a sound I generally enjoy, but nothing here was really pushing boundaries and most of it blurred together. Feels like an album where you could show me any of the songs as a sample and I'd think I would like it, but the album as a whole is too much of the same.

Duke Ellington - Far East Suite - This is why I hate ranking albums sometimes because this slaps so hard, but jazz is a situational genre for me.

The Birthday Massacre - Walking With Strangers - A downright Gothic delight - perfect for brooding nighttimes & wallowing in blissful misery. Shimmering synths coupled with hard rock guitars and Chibi's vocals guiding you through her world of dark fantasy and twisted wonderlands make this an album I come back to time and time again.

Favorite song: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor

Seanchan: Whatever People Say I am, Thats What Im Not - Theres something about the general sound on offer here that I enjoy. I wouldnt say theres many stand out songs, but on re-listen I was surprised at how many little bits and pieces that I remembered.

FoolFantastic: Arctic Monkeys arrived just at the tail-end of the post-punk/garage rock revival scene, but they landed with one of the best albums to come from the movement. A solid third of the tracks here are all-timers for me, and the rest help form a very consistent experience. This is pretty much the best mainstream rock had to offer in the 2000s.

Far East Suite: I think I fundamentally agree with both Fool and Sean's writeups, strangely enough. I find this album more than mildly evocative in the moment, and jazz has a high floor for me - even so, I'm left with those mental images lingering in lieu of the music itself, and so I'm not sure if it's truly testing my ceiling.

Walking With Strangers: To me, it's musically and lyrically unified enough to feel like a concept album without even being one, all while the individual songs stand out even more for that. Perpetually pretty and on point vocal performances further propel an album I have difficulty describing - an ineffability which seems to help it stick in my head.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not: From a listeners perspective, its perfectly creditable and even catchy at times. Still, theres something missing from what comes off to me as a peculiarly slight, rather insubstantial and yet seemingly self-important effort.

Seanchan: Manic. Distressing. Kinda jazzy? I wouldnt exactly call this an easy listen. Just didnt quite land for me the way I might have wanted it to.

FoolFantastic: A big chaotic journey that never lets you ease into its sound. Hallucinatory and enthralling, shifting drastically between moods yet never losing its step.

rwlh: After a slowish start, I really got into this. Illmatic has an incredible sense of time and place. Its really stuck with me, more than most on this list.
Favorite song: Lifes a Bitch

Seanchan: Rap is a genre where you have to really do something special for me to take notice. While I know this is considered a classic, it just didnt do much for me.

FoolFantastic: Obviously a classic hip hop album, though there are a few dozen I would take over it, both before and after its release. It's hard for me to put my finger on why, but I think I simply prefer the production on most other major rap albums. Having it constantly talked up as an all-time greatest by some people makes me feel less into it than I am.

Hellfire - What Fool said

Illmatic - Nothing wrong with this album at all, the lyrical and storytelling prowess is impressive as Nas honestly raps about inner city living, adversity in childhood, and violence. Instrumentally I just prefer other albums on here.

I decided to actually check if I had 'a few dozen' hip hop albums I rank higher than Illmatic or if I was exaggerating, but it came in at #38 among hip hop albums in my last list update. Which is still high enough to land in my 9/10 zone!

Anyway, here are my top 38 hip hop albums since I took the time to comb through my list; maybe I should actually nominate some of these sometime (some may be edge cases):

Favorite song: So Many People in the Neighborhood

Seanchan: If variety is the spice of life, Quebec really emptied the rack. This album is all over the place, and thats sometimes good and sometimes bad. But its at least interesting, even if I have a hard time thinking that any single person would like everything on offer here.

FoolFantastic: Just one of those wild albums that showcase a band doing whatever they want. A lot of fun, but little of it stuck with me.
