11. Slipknot - Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses (2004)

rwlh: This started out so cool but I didnt like anything other than the first song. This is the only album (other than my last placer) I can say that I disliked. Of note though, my leg kept bouncing to the heavy beats, so it wasnt a total loss.
Favorite song: Prelude 3.0

Seanchan: This is a tough one to rank for me, despite having heard it many times over the years. Theres parts that are still interesting/good but then theres swaths of this I dont really need to hear again. It remains more palatable to me in 2023 than Slipknots earlier albums but nu-metal isnt necessarily a sound thats stood the test of time.

FoolFantastic: One of the surprises for me, not that I particularly loved it but I expected the opposite and walked away thinking it was pretty good.

So the top 10 are, in some order:

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Green Day - American Idiot
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual
Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica
Tool - 10,000 Days

Can't say I'm too surprised by any of those. Here's my guess at the ordering for the top 10:

Green Day - American Idiot
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Tool - 10,000 Days
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica
Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual

Hellfire: Theres a certain understated yet somehow tawdry elegance to its quieter moments that I feel is essential to the piece as a whole, even if its not as memorable as its loud, sudden sections.

Illmatic: Clearly good, but I seem to lack the positionality and perspective to properly perceive what so many people praise about it.

Quebec: I could rank these songs in totally different orders, depending on my day-to-day temperament, and so many of them are memorable, though sometimes not desirably so - all a testament to their parent albums grab-bag appeal.

Favorite song: Wanna Be Startin Somethin

Seanchan: Obviously Thriller is a classic with some of the biggest pop hits of all time. At the same time, Im not that big on the non-singles here. When youve had as many hit singles as MJs had, its kind of hard sometimes to want to listen to his lesser songs.

FoolFantastic: A pop classic, but its legacy has always felt a bit inflated to me. I honestly think his previous album, Off the Wall, is a better whole. Half of the songs here are all-timers, but I largely prefer them on their own.

Favorite song: My Land

Seanchan: Another album I loved back in the day that I hadnt listened to in a few years. Hearing this was falling back in love with Sonata Arctica all over again. Its the type of metal that I love, big, loud, fast, kind of stupid, but pulled off with absolute sincerity.

FoolFantastic: The type of metal that has basically never clicked with me. Maybe someday.

I took every pair of albums and calculated who would win. So, in a direct match, Sonata Arctica beat out 14 of the other albums, lost to 6 of them, and tied with 4.

Favorite song: Time After Time

Seanchan: Better on a relisten than I remembered. Its not a favorite pop album or vocalist but its still fine enough. Listening to this right after a few everything sounds the same albums probably helps it out a bit.

FoolFantastic: I'm not the biggest fan of mainstream music from the 80s, but this is one of the rare albums from the era that really clicks with me. Lauper goes through quite a few styles of pop here and doesn't really miss.

Favorite song: Take the Power Back

Seanchan: A singular vocalist backed by a good hard rock sound. Its somewhat sad how their lyrics and messages are still relevant and should be paid attention to some 30 years later.

FoolFantastic: One of the few angry albums I know that truly justifies its rage. Zack de la Rocha is a phenomenal vocalist and Morello transforms his guitar into whatever he wants. Killer tracks beginning to end.

Seanchan: (I Have No Idea - Hard Rock Edition) Im probably repeating myself with what I said when we ranked the tracks, but while I generally like the soundscape here it all just gloms together in a way that makes this kind of forgettable overall. Not bad, just something thats hard to remember which tracks are which even a few days later.

FoolFantastic: I'll be honest, I don't think Aenima or Lateralus would do much better for me here. Tool is just a band I do not get, even if I can see the talent in what they do.

Favorite song: Funeral for a Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)

Seanchan: This was one of those albums I wasnt sure I had initially ranked correctly, but after a re-listen, this is exactly where it should be. The opening 4 songs, clocking in at 20-25 minutes, are pretty incredible. Yes, at 75 minutes it is a little long, but theres always something to look forward to. Even my lowest ranked songs arent terrible, they just look bad when you realize there are some stone cold classics at the very top.

FoolFantastic: A sweeping piano rock epic, which is the only time those words will ever go together. Home to several of the greatest songs ever recorded, and though there may be one or two obvious duds among its 17 tracks, the rest all showcase Elton's range. One of the few hour-plus albums I will regularly put on.

Green Day - American Idiot
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill

Wow, Alanis sneaking up there! Can she crack the top 3?

For #8 through #6, the average ranking actually got worse, even though the W-L-T score got better. There's also, average-wise, a pretty big jump up to Elton at #5.

rwlh: This was the biggest disappointment of the bunch for me. Ive always been interested in Bowie, but this album feels like stereotypical classic rock, which Im not that into. Maybe Id like his later output more?
Favorite song: Suffragette City

Seanchan: A rock classic that I sadly had not heard before doing this ranking. Doing a re-listen for this album ranking really cemented that it HAD to be higher than I originally placed it. This is a really solid album front to back! Even if it doesnt have as many big hits (radio or personal) as my next 2 ranked albums (Fever and Thriller) have, it has the advantage of being a no skips album.

FoolFantastic: Simply the best album by one of the greatest musicians (though Low and Blackstar make worthy competition). Though none of the tracks would crack my personal Bowie top 10, pretty much every song here is great at a minimum. Few albums have ever been this consistent front to back. Tying this all together is a story of stardom gone wrong, truly bringing the 'glam' to life.

Seanchan: An overall good album but one that doesnt really thrill me. Still, theres a lot of her hit 90s singles here that make this very listenable.

FoolFantastic: I think this album sits in that unfortunate zone where it was popular right when I was developing my first memories, so it feels too familiar for me to truly appreciate its strength. Despite this, I can't deny the volume of great songs here.

That's a link to a Google Sheet where you can compare your compatibility with everyone else from Volume 4. You can also see what the ranking would have been based on average rather than W-L-T. At the very top, Alanis and Elton move up, Black Sabbath moves down.

  • The album with the highest worst vote was a tie between Alanis and Elton with a 12.
  • The album with the lowest best vote was Bad Religion with a 13.
  • 7 albums received 1st place votes, with Green Day the only one with multiple (3 in total).
  • 6 albums received last place votes, with BSB getting 2 and The Ataris getting 3.
And, if you're a crazy person like me and really want to know, here's links to the previous 3 Volumes:

No worries about the pace; I think it worked well; thank you for compiling and posting all the rankings! Thank you too to Seanchan for the compatibility sheet!

And oops, I sort of fell behind in posting my album comments. In short, my top five albums are all to some extent (variably new) favorites of mine. As for the rest:
  • Ziggy Stardust, revolutionary in its time, feels like comfort food canon by today's standards.
  • I greatly respect Rage Against the Machine and really want to love it, but it keeps not really sticking with me at all.
  • To me, Paranoid's a stone-cold classic that I certainly like and respect but just as certainly dont love.
  • Several of Thriller's songs work at least as well as they were supposed to, but the swings miss, and I find it all a bit samey.

In an effort to keep this topic alive a bit longer, and since I've taken to ranking all the albums into a bigger list, here are my top 20 albums from the first 4 Volumes:
  1. Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell
  2. The Beatles - Abbey Road
  3. Green Day - American Idiot
  4. Metallica - Master of Puppets
  5. Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia
  6. Guns N Roses' - Appetite for Destruction
  7. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
  8. Avenged Sevenfold - Avenged Sevenfold
  9. Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica
  10. Billy Joel - The Stranger
  11. blink-182 - Enema of the State
  12. Coeur De Pirate - Roses
  13. Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid
  14. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
  15. The Killers - Hot Fuss
  16. Dream Theater - Images and Words
  17. Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
  18. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
  19. Of Monsters and Men - My Head is an Animal
  20. The Ataris - So Long, Astoria
  21. Sunspot - Singularity
Okay, fine top 21 just so I can show Sunspot! This means Powerslave is my favorite album I hadn't heard before. In terms of biggest surprises though, I'd say that Roses and The ArchAndroid were the winners.

On the other side, here are my bottom 5:

By my count, that's 42 of the 100 albums in someone's top 10! With only 5 users in the tally, that seems crazy high but also a testament to how broad music and musical taste is.

7: She's So Unusual
8: Thriller
9: So Long, Astoria
10: Ziggy Stardust

It's hard deciding on a top ten, particularly as my tastes can fluctuate wildly day-to-day & I haven't revisted many of these albums in a while, but I think this is close enough for today? At least, I'm sure of the top three... Honorable mentions to:

Melodrama
Abbey Road
Fever

Melodrama & Abbey Road have some outstanding 10/10 tracks, so somedays I put them at the absolute top of the list even if I find them less consistent. Fever isn't something I'm often in the mood for, but I was crazy into it when working on the order for this batch of albums, so it could easily break into the top 6 when I'm in the right mood.

...Also, I suddenly wish to revisit Spice, so add a shoutout to that. A bit surprised I ranked "Breakfast in America" over it, but I was briefly obsessed with two of its tracks, so I suppose timing was probably heavily in its favor. Or it's even better than I recall. Alas, I can't re-rate all 100 albums right now, so I kinda have to go off memory.

@FoolFantastic

Over 2 years into this, has the whole Track and Album rankings met your expectations? What would you say has been the biggest surprise so far?

I know you've said you do something similar-ish in a more dedicated music community. What do you see as the main differences between here and there? Are there any albums or styles of music that are only popular in one place?

I've had a lot of fun with this; it's nice to feel like we made some sort of small album club. Also, despite having been visiting this board since the mid-2000s, I've always had difficulty keeping people straight with purely text-based communication, and this has been a good way of getting a better sense of individual users.

As far as surprises, I'm not sure - I'm happy it's lasted this long. Even if it never has a ton of participants, it fills a certain niche here.

Comparing the other forum, the other is on a website dedicated to a music critic consensus list, so the people who stick around there tend to have similar taste to critics. Which, the main difference there is metal; metal is huge here while it is largely overlooked there. Otherwise, I have heard nearly 80% of the albums we have covered beforehand, which I think means our tastes do largely line up with what critics consider important works. Both places certainly focus on pop and especially the various forms of rock, though the other forum shows greater appreciation for jazz, folk, and singer/songwriter types. I think both groups could do with more attention focused on hip hop and electronic - which, speaking of surprises, I thought we would be tackling a lot more electronic here. Maybe even a video game soundtrack - when are we gonna tackle Streets of Rage 2?

I've thought about trying a game soundtrack a few times, but it's been rather difficult to find anything that would work well here. I'd need to find an album that

A: Didn't have way too many tracks. Most games from the past few generations of a decent length have MASSIVE soundtracks... like Octopath Traveler 1 has 85 tracks and it's not really an outlier; games with 50 to 100 tracks aren't exactly rare. Even a smaller, indie game like "Super Lesiban Animal RPG" seems to somehow have 74 tracks (?!) so I feel like I'd need to limit the search to retro games that didn't have room for an infinite number of songs or very small indie games.

B: Isn't filled with too many <40 second incidental tracks that we'd need to skip. Having a list of 10 to 20 "don't rank these songs" would just be tedious; from your standpoint of having to tell everyone to not include them & the rankers having to skip so many.

C: Is readily available to listen to in a good quality that is easy to find & not in danger of being removed for copyright reasons.

C2: And available in a format where the tracks aren't set up to loop repeatedly. I know with NES tracks one or two of the main people uploading them tend to extend every single song to last three minutes, regardless of how many times it must loop to reach that point.

[Arguably we could identify the points that each song loops and tell everyone they can stop at that point. All it'd take is examining each song, documenting all the loop points, and for every single participant to pay attention to the runtime of every track to know when to stop! This is not a solution, please do not take this seriously.]

D: Has enough songs that I like that I'd consider it worth nominating

E: Be popular enough that someone else would consider supporting the nomination.

F: And as a counterpoint to A, the album must not have too few tracks. If you go with games too retro, then you wind up with only four or five tracks & something that short could feel like a bit of a wasted nomination.

-

Thus far, I haven't found anything that could plausibly hit every criteria. Even your example of Streets of Rage 2 has 23 tracks (+2 <40 second songs that don't count) which feels like it might be pushing things a bit... though I suppose Hamilton did have 46 tracks, so I'm probably overthinking the number of tracks. I've been trying not to go over 20.

So... I'm certainly open to the idea of getting some game music in here, it's just been easier to nominate more traditional albums.

Well, anything with an extended number of tracks, I can ask people to just submit their top 15. The main concern is length - I'm sure plenty of people here could list their top 15 FF7 tracks off the top of their head, but would they relisten to the entire thing to make sure? Should we even demand a full relisten in that case (...not that I would know otherwise)?

I've thought about nominating the Celeste OST and/or the Sayonara Wild Hearts OST before, but besides both being more closely composed for their games' contexts than most OSTs, they each have their own awkward aspects for this series.

Celeste's OST has some potential crossover appeal from the game's VGM renown, but its 99-minute length (referring to the designated OST only) is conversely a concern, considering our history with and past comments on albums over ~60 minutes outside this board's wheelhouse.

Sayonara Wild Hearts' OST is short enough to work well, but it's comprised of a minority of mostly short, lyrics-centric pop songs sprinkled among a number of typically even shorter instrumentals. And the OST's tracklist pretty much bundles up all the former and all the latter in discrete batches, departing from the game's own order in the process.

If someone said they knew their top 15 FF7 songs, I'd believe them--it'd be an odd thing to lie about. I'm not really sure how I'd personally go about tackling an 80+ song nomination... I feel like even deciding on a top 15 would be a fairly big task, though I'll admit it could be fun to tackle one really massive pick like that. I don't think I'd personally nominate something that long, but I might support it if someone else seriously wanted to.

Considering that Hamilton is still my favorite thing we've covered, I'm not really sure why I was arguing against picks with a lot of songs in the first place to be honest.

99 minutes doesn't sound too bad, honestly. That's not much longer than The Wall at 80 minutes and shorter than the over two hours of Hamilton.

I'm afraid I know nothing about Sayonara Wild Hearts to comment on that end.

(Forgive the account switching. I try to stick with Raetsel at the music topics, but I'm too tired to switch back right now.)

I have definitely considered VGM and do plan on nominating a set. It's just been a matter of finding a group that fits well together and also isn't too long (like I wouldn't want to throw a NES soundtrack in the same group as a modern era one). Same for electronic minus worrying about the length.

Also I should do a top ten of all the volumes soon as well

I've always had difficulty keeping people straight with purely text-based communication, and this has been a good way of getting a better sense of individual users.

This continues to be a problem for me. I recognize the usernames of the regulars but still couldn't really give you a good sense of most of their tastes. I know Raetsel_Lapin'stastes tend to align with mine on the album level (see the impromptu top 10's above, you like some of the more "artsy"/"critically acclaimed" (in a very general sense) albums I would have never touched otherwise, and we've got some "metalheads" like Steiner that only show up for certain types of albums. I suppose that's better than nothing but it's still not great. It applies for even the larger B8 though; there are very few users who I have a good sense of, and most of those are the, let's call them notorious, posters.

As for game soundtracks, I'll say I'm a bit negative on the idea overall. The length (in time and tracks) just means rankings are even more arbitrary because of the difficulty in the task. I also think soundtracks should be heard as part of the media they were developed for. I enjoyed Hamilton but it wasn't as good listening stand alone as it was watching the actual musical.

If I were trying to think about game soundtracks that have stuck with me and that I've listened to some outside of the game...I think of Mario RPG and DKC2. There's also that remix album of DKC music, Kong in Concert. Newer games, there's Bastion and Hotline Miami. Oh, and there was some fun stuff in Road 96.
