Theres parts that are still interesting/good but then theres swaths of this I dont really need to hear again. It remains more palatable to me in 2023 than Slipknots earlier albums but nu-metal isnt necessarily a sound thats stood the test of time. Hellfire: Theres a certain understated yet somehow tawdry elegance to its quieter moments that I feel is essential to the piece as a whole, even if its not as memorable as its loud, sudden sections. Illmatic: Clearly good, but I seem to lack the positionality and perspective to properly perceive what so many people praise about it. Quebec: I could rank these songs in totally different orders, depending on my day-to-day temperament, and so many of them are memorable, though sometimes not desirably so - all a testament to their parent albums grab-bag appeal. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ ... @FoolFantastic Over 2 years into this, has the whole Track and Album rankings met your expectations? What would you say has been the biggest surprise so far? I know you've said you do something similar-ish in a more dedicated music community. What do you see as the main differences between here and there? Are there any albums or styles of music that are only popular in one place? --- "That was unnecessarily dramatic". - NY Mets motto (courtesy of InnerTubeHero) Congratulations to azuarc, the guru of gurus and winner of GotD 2020! ... Seanchan posted... @FoolFantastic I've had a lot of fun with this; it's nice to feel like we made some sort of small album club. Also, despite having been visiting this board since the mid-2000s, I've always had difficulty keeping people straight with purely text-based communication, and this has been a good way of getting a better sense of individual users. As far as surprises, I'm not sure - I'm happy it's lasted this long. Even if it never has a ton of participants, it fills a certain niche here. Comparing the other forum, the other is on a website dedicated to a music critic consensus list, so the people who stick around there tend to have similar taste to critics. Which, the main difference there is metal; metal is huge here while it is largely overlooked there. Otherwise, I have heard nearly 80% of the albums we have covered beforehand, which I think means our tastes do largely line up with what critics consider important works. Both places certainly focus on pop and especially the various forms of rock, though the other forum shows greater appreciation for jazz, folk, and singer/songwriter types. I think both groups could do with more attention focused on hip hop and electronic - which, speaking of surprises, I thought we would be tackling a lot more electronic here. Maybe even a video game soundtrack - when are we gonna tackle Streets of Rage 2? --- My top 100 games (with write-ups): https://foolfantastic.com/top-100-video-games-project/ Top 250 songs: https://foolfantastic.com/3290-2/ ... FoolFantastic posted... Maybe even a video game soundtrack - when are we gonna tackle Streets of Rage 2? I've thought about trying a game soundtrack a few times, but it's been rather difficult to find anything that would work well here. I'd need to find an album that A: Didn't have way too many tracks. Most games from the past few generations of a decent length have MASSIVE soundtracks... like Octopath Traveler 1 has 85 tracks and it's not really an outlier; games with 50 to 100 tracks aren't exactly rare. Even a smaller, indie game like "Super Lesiban Animal RPG" seems to somehow have 74 tracks (?!) so I feel like I'd need to limit the search to retro games that didn't have room for an infinite number of songs or very small indie games. B: Isn't filled with too many <40 second incidental tracks that we'd need to skip. Having a list of 10 to 20 "don't rank these songs" would just be tedious; from your standpoint of having to tell everyone to not include them & the rankers having to skip so many. C: Is readily available to listen to in a good quality that is easy to find & not in danger of being removed for copyright reasons. C2: And available in a format where the tracks aren't set up to loop repeatedly. I know with NES tracks one or two of the main people uploading them tend to extend every single song to last three minutes, regardless of how many times it must loop to reach that point. [Arguably we could identify the points that each song loops and tell everyone they can stop at that point. All it'd take is examining each song, documenting all the loop points, and for every single participant to pay attention to the runtime of every track to know when to stop! This is not a solution, please do not take this seriously.] D: Has enough songs that I like that I'd consider it worth nominating E: Be popular enough that someone else would consider supporting the nomination. F: And as a counterpoint to A, the album must not have too few tracks. If you go with games too retro, then you wind up with only four or five tracks & something that short could feel like a bit of a wasted nomination. - Thus far, I haven't found anything that could plausibly hit every criteria. Even your example of Streets of Rage 2 has 23 tracks (+2 <40 second songs that don't count) which feels like it might be pushing things a bit... though I suppose Hamilton did have 46 tracks, so I'm probably overthinking the number of tracks. I've been trying not to go over 20. So... I'm certainly open to the idea of getting some game music in here, it's just been easier to nominate more traditional albums. --- Currently deciding on a new sig because as funny as the last quote was, it did inadvertently sound like I hated Fire Emblem Engage. ... Well, anything with an extended number of tracks, I can ask people to just submit their top 15. The main concern is length - I'm sure plenty of people here could list their top 15 FF7 tracks off the top of their head, but would they relisten to the entire thing to make sure? Should we even demand a full relisten in that case (...not that I would know otherwise)? --- My top 100 games (with write-ups): https://foolfantastic.com/top-100-video-games-project/ Top 250 songs: https://foolfantastic.com/3290-2/ ... I've thought about nominating the Celeste OST and/or the Sayonara Wild Hearts OST before, but besides both being more closely composed for their games' contexts than most OSTs, they each have their own awkward aspects for this series. Celeste's OST has some potential crossover appeal from the game's VGM renown, but its 99-minute length (referring to the designated OST only) is conversely a concern, considering our history with and past comments on albums over ~60 minutes outside this board's wheelhouse. Sayonara Wild Hearts' OST is short enough to work well, but it's comprised of a minority of mostly short, lyrics-centric pop songs sprinkled among a number of typically even shorter instrumentals. And the OST's tracklist pretty much bundles up all the former and all the latter in discrete batches, departing from the game's own order in the process. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ ... If someone said they knew their top 15 FF7 songs, I'd believe them--it'd be an odd thing to lie about. I'm not really sure how I'd personally go about tackling an 80+ song nomination... I feel like even deciding on a top 15 would be a fairly big task, though I'll admit it could be fun to tackle one really massive pick like that. I don't think I'd personally nominate something that long, but I might support it if someone else seriously wanted to. Considering that Hamilton is still my favorite thing we've covered, I'm not really sure why I was arguing against picks with a lot of songs in the first place to be honest. --- Currently deciding on a new sig because as funny as the last quote was, it did inadvertently sound like I hated Fire Emblem Engage. ... That's not much longer than The Wall at 80 minutes and shorter than the over two hours of Hamilton. I'm afraid I know nothing about Sayonara Wild Hearts to comment on that end. I have definitely considered VGM and do plan on nominating a set. It's just been a matter of finding a group that fits well together and also isn't too long (like I wouldn't want to throw a NES soundtrack in the same group as a modern era one). Same for electronic minus worrying about the length. Also I should do a top ten of all the volumes soon as well --- Save in the name of true love ~Project 1000~ ... Copied to Clipboard!

FoolFantastic posted... I've always had difficulty keeping people straight with purely text-based communication, and this has been a good way of getting a better sense of individual users. This continues to be a problem for me. I recognize the usernames of the regulars but still couldn't really give you a good sense of most of their tastes. I know Raetsel_Lapin'stastes tend to align with mine on the album level (see the impromptu top 10's above, you like some of the more "artsy"/"critically acclaimed" (in a very general sense) albums I would have never touched otherwise, and we've got some "metalheads" like Steiner that only show up for certain types of albums. I suppose that's better than nothing but it's still not great. It applies for even the larger B8 though; there are very few users who I have a good sense of, and most of those are the, let's call them notorious, posters. As for game soundtracks, I'll say I'm a bit negative on the idea overall. The length (in time and tracks) just means rankings are even more arbitrary because of the difficulty in the task. I also think soundtracks should be heard as part of the media they were developed for. I enjoyed Hamilton but it wasn't as good listening stand alone as it was watching the actual musical. If I were trying to think about game soundtracks that have stuck with me and that I've listened to some outside of the game...I think of Mario RPG and DKC2. There's also that remix album of DKC music, Kong in Concert. Newer games, there's Bastion and Hotline Miami.
