The first Isekei story is an old medieval story from England. Supposedly 2 children, a boy and girl, with green skin once showed up in a village and lived there a while, then left again as mysteriously as they arrived

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_children_of_Woolpit?wprov=sfla1

Our world was the "another world" in this case. And the main characters were from somewhere else

Didn't all of the kids in Chronicles of Narnia get hit by a fucking train in the last book so they got permanently isekai'd into Narnia?

Gonna have to disagree with this. If visitors from outside our world count then you have to count pretty much all the Hindu shit.

portal fiction series "thomas covenant" was released in the late 70s. the guy gets transported to some fantasy world after getting hit by a car (he doesn't die tho). he also returns to Earth and back to the fantasy world a few times so it is not a truly permanent thing for him. tho I think the final book leaves off in the fantasy world. I never finished it and had to look up a summary.

And the Christian Bible. Pretty much any mythology really. They all have some other dimension/level of existence in there somewhere.

I went straight to the Hindus because it's the oldest one. I'm not aware of anything Isekai-ish about even older things like Gilgamesh. I think all the places he went to he was able to get there on foot.

Not too knowledgeable on Hindu mythology so that's another interesting fact for my brain

Hinduism predates any main religion still being practiced. It's probably not the literal first religion but anything even older is going to be some flavor of paganism and the pagans of today won't resemble 5000 year old pagans.

Not exactly. Sometimes they come back as a spider. Or a slime. Or sometimes they don't reincarnate at all they just physically get sucked into a new world.

Hinduism contemporaries are Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythology. That's how old it is.

Isekai is more like a setting rather than a genre. You can have a rom com Isekai, shonen Isekai, etc.

Kind of like urban horror. Horror is the genre, urban is the setting.

John Carter of Mars-- because of different gravity, he's basically Super Man, and he hooks up with all time babe Princess Dejah Thoris. It influenced tons of stuff that came after it too.

Essentially yes, they all basically got sent to heaven other than Susan because she "grew up" and liked stuff like lipstick or something.

TC's example is reverse isekai, bringing a fantastic character to the real world. Sonic X is my favorite example, but Digimon is also good because it goes both ways.
