Around here they're mostly managed by apps where you buy a session in app. There's someone that comes in to enforce by checking plates at random, but the days of the parking lot attendant that takes money and issues you a slip seems numbered. Of course, physical machines where you pay and it automatically provides you a slip is still a thing in a lot of places, but I'm even seeing those being taken out now in favor of the app.

Oh yea this thing drives me nuts too. I have to download ANOTHER app and set up an account just to park? Get the fuck outta here, seriously.

I'd expect anyone living in a city with a car to be able to afford a smartphone at this point, but seems stupid if that is literally the only way.

Used to work in a school. We implemented a system where school trips etc had to be paid online using a portal Had one or two stubbon people who refused to give an e-mail address so we could set them up because "I've never had to do this before..." well no shit. People need to get into the 21st centaur.

I don't mind using an app to pay to park but every city in the US needs to use the same app, which will never happen.

And no, not everyone has a smart phone. You need to have options for cash/debit card/quarters.

Live out in the boonies or a small town, and a car is an absolute necessity.

First we need to restructure our cities because they are designed to force you to travel by car. You've probably heard about stroads, if not, there are some good YouTube videos on them.

Yeah, he's skipping the proper process in favor of "lul fuck people with personal vehicles". It would require a restructuring of infrastructure for a robust public transit system. Even then, the US largely lacks a sense of public community, so said transit system would be vandalized in all sorts of ways and potentially unsafe to ride.

At the wrong target. Personal vehicles are the current system in the US. People can realistically no more avoid them than avoid dealing with the crappy healthcare system in this country. So being glib at people working with what they have comes across as a stupid take.

I think it's awful specifically because the app Austin uses is awful. When I'm out and about downtown and need to park, half the time I have to call my fiancee at home and have her log on to pay because trying to pay gives me an error message. I've tried different cards, Google pay, and Samsung pay, but nothing I've used has let me pay 100% of the time.

I hate this trend of needing a phone to do basic things in society. The point of me getting out of the house is to get away from my damned phone.

I really detest needing one to see a menu. Like, wtf? You want me to stare at a tiny screen rather than read a nice large paper menu?

My folks have stopped going to a lot of restaurants cause they switched to that crap, and even though my mom owns a smartphone, there's zero way she will figure out how to work it, let alone want to read a menu on it. My dad outright refuses to have a smartphone, which is a bit funny to me since he's been a pc gamer since '87.

I wouldn't mind the smartphone menus,

If they weren't a motherfucking pain in the ass to read and navigate. I've yet to see one that was quick, responsive, intuitive.

Especially bad is when they include Lunch menu pricing items near the top. "Oh you saw this thing you want? Fuck you, it isn't available at the price. Or it's the perfect serving size for your hunger level? Fuck you, should have come earlier chuckle fuckle"

What? Your cell phone is precisely intended for you to take it out of the house, if your reasoning for leaving the house is to get away from your cell phone I think you should just get rid of your phone.

You miss my point. I'm going out to get away from technology in some cases. Other times I'm doing something that really shouldn't involve a phone. Just because the Smartphone *can* do other things than take calls away from home doesn't mean it should.

Like, ffs, I had an MRI scheduled and I got a text from the imaging place to use the app to check in when I got there. Like wtf? I'm in the imaging office and you want me to try to connect via 4g to use an app when I can just tell the receptionist I'm there?

Using the smartphone as a catch all is lazy, and in many cases makes life harder for everyone, with a lousy connection, apps to download, apps to learn on the fly to navigate, etc.

It shouldn't be replacing basic things m, if, and here's the important part, it's inconvenient and works worse than the original system.

You can't improve a paper menu. It's right there, has the info you need, and if specials are involved then get a chalkboard and write them there. No middleware tech bs needed.

You can't improve telling the receptionist that you have arrived at your appointed time. Anything else adds needless steps and bloat to a very, very simple system.

I think you're missing the point, honestly. Restaurants that exclusively use online menus aren't doing it because they think they're improving upon the paper menu, they do it because it's more affordable to put the menu on the website they're already paying for than it is to pay for physical menus.
