Your mother will not let her pregnant daughter turn on the air in hot weather. She is heartless.

However, that is her right to do so in her own home. And to dictate how she runs her home and to change the rules she has is wrong.

She just didn't want my sister to spend alot of money on one, or go out and buy one herself for two days of hot weather.

My sister in law and her bf lived with me and my wife for about a year. I am not even exaggerating when I say that he would turn on the shower, sit on the toilet for a half hour, then get in the shower for another half hour every fucking morning. We would turn the heat on in the winter when the house dropped below 67F and set it to 72F and hed open the windows because he got hot. Running my bill up even higher. We talked to her multiple times and she would just shrug it off as he is who he is. So I had a man to man talk with him. Which is weird because I am older than him by only 2 years and had to talk to him like a child. He had a hissy fit and left, and my sis in law god mad at me. She left soon after and she was 7 months pregnant. Not my fucking problem.

Youre not going to come into my house that I used my VA benefits to secure after serving for 15 years and took 8 goddamnit deployments and just mooch off everything I gave up to get here. Abso-fucking-lutely not.

I did that when I lived in florida. I just set up 2 fans in front of me and sat in the cross-breeze. I hate the feel of artificial cold AC creates. Using fans also makes it much less of a shock when stepping outside.

She let her turn it on ONLY because you already bought it and pushed her into a corner. You dont get lauded for doing the right thing after your bullshit is called out. You simply cant see the situation for what it is. You were manipulated and you fell for it. Its ok. Thats no fault of your own. We help family because we love and care for them. Unfortunately, some enterprising family members capitalize upon that. Family did the same shit to me until I put my foot down.

If you didnt, you would not have come here seeking validation on whether what you were going to do was wrong or not. The fact that you even had that line of though shows that deep down in your heart, you know something is fucked up about your mothers decision.

Im guessing youre a relatively young adult. Trust me, at 18/19, I just threw money and resources at my family after I joined the military when they needed a bill paid here, a phone turned back on there. Then, when I hit some dire times in my mid 20s and foreclosed on my first home, no one was there. I couldnt call in a favor. I couldnt call in those loans I gave out. 18 year old me had to learn hard lessons that 34 year old me will never forget.

Im not trolling you. Im giving you advice so you dont repeat my dumbass mistakes.

Youre not wrong for caring about the wellbeing of your sister and her unborn child. But you are wrong to go behind your mothers back after she dictated the rules of her home. And she is wrong for wanting to deny your sister comfort when she needs it. Those are not mutually exclusive.

Ok, let me teach you something to help you adjust back to civilian life. In the real world, people don't have to (and should not have to) blindly obey orders by their "superiors" without question. In the military everyone has distinct, inflexible rank, but not in real life. It's not that people don't "know their place," it's that you don't get to override the opinions of others just because you're head of a household, in charge of a project, an assistant manager, or whatever. And you shouldn't.

While of course the homeowner should have final say on house rules, that doesn't mean unquestioned authority. Everyone living there has a place to express their opinions and weigh in on the merit of the rules. It can improve the living conditions for everyone, including the head of household. In this particular case, it's absolutely ridiculous to refuse to allow an AC, especially since TC offered to cover the electric bill difference.

I'm sorry some asshole took advantage of you, but you shouldn't let that warp your perspective like this.

It is though. In an era of record high prices for everything and record low wages, the first thing in your mind should be: what is this additional expense going to cost me? It doesnt matter how little running an AC costs. Its more money than you were paying before for someone elses benefit.

in some places its not just an additional expense, its an actual necessity. Its only june 3rd and yesterday it was 33c/89f feeling like 38c/100f. Reality is heat waves kill people all the time and its not getting better.

Whatever her reason is, thats her house. The foundation of the issue is that you cannot start dictating other folks rules in their house. She is wrong for not wanting the ac running yet. And TC is wrong for attempting to circumvent her rules in her house.

of course you aren't in the wrong. and wtf at people whining about the power bill? how poor or miserable do you have to be to wonder about a negligible increase that would cause? in the summer months my ac never gets turned off and never gets above like 73 and my bill is like 200 or less in a decent size house.

The underlying issue isnt the increase in bill. Its dictating the times in someone elses house. You simply cant do that. If you dont like their rules, you have options outside of going behind their back on their property.
