Weird thing (to me) is that he was a serious newscaster in L.A. before the show. That's where he met his wife. Guess there's more money doing a talk show..

I won't turn to it, but ngl, I'll watch it if I go somewhere and it's on.

Not actors, but all those kinds of shows are scripted by the producers, for ratings. Even 'reality' shows have a lot of scripting. (Cash Cab comes to mind. The 'contestants' are told in advance that the cab they will be getting into is the Cash Cab, and told to act surprised, and they have to sign waivers and such before they're allowed to get in it)

Cash Cab is basically a moving game show. (Think Jeopardy, but in a cab) The host picks them up in the cab and takes them to their destination, and asks them general knowledge questions along the way, and each question is worth X amount of dollars, and the amount increases every couple questions. The contestant(s) are allowed 3 mistakes, after which the cab pulls over and kicks them out and they get nothing. If they manage to get to their destination, they then have a choice to either take the winnings, or try a double-or-nothing video question. They're also allowed one 'street shoutout' (asking a random person on the street) for help with a question. And no, I don't think it's on anymore. They do have reruns on Game Show Network, iirc)

Most chose to do the double or nothing? Was this small amounts in winnings usually, like under 5k?

Some did, some didn't want to risk it. And yes, most winnings were under $5,000. The record is $6,200 (and that was getting the double-or-nothing question, and despite missing two $200 questions)

Springer started out more-or-less the same way. Somewhat serious, but then became more and more raunchy until it became what we know it as today.

Not really. They were just the only things as had to watch during daytime, especially before we got cable (and even then, the cable was only in one room), so in our own rooms, we were at the mercy of trash TV.

I think Maury was filmed somewhere in the NE and not NY. Vermont maybe. When I played FF 11 we had a player in the LS who loved maury. He would host watch parties and take bets on father or not the father. It's one of those memories I still think fondly of the time I played. If that dude sees this. Thanks for the laughs. He was a real funny dude
In the early mid 90s it was filmed in NYC. Thats where I saw a taping at

I wonder if they were mix of real people and staged stuff. Because they had this old me who was doing his horse. I don't think you can pay someone 50 dollar to do that publicly . Unless the dude was like homeless or something.

It was first a mix of real and staged, than later on, they went full staged, and crazy. Using the same person sometimes as someone completely different, with a new hairstyle, etc.

Oooh, oooh! I felt I needed to share this story I found. The site I found it on is long since dead, but I found it on the Intenet Archive.

https://web.archive.org/web/20050101090431/http://www.jumptheshark.com/

"I recall one episode where Povich should have received a well-deserved punch-in-the-mouth. A woman had told her daughter FOR FOURTEEN YEARS that a certain man was her father. The man expressed no hard feelings towards the young girl, but legitimately felt the girls mother had simply singled him out as a convenient answer to her daughters inquiries about who her father was, and he had informed the girl that he did not believe he was her father. Sure enough, the results were read, and the man was not the girls father. This caused her to break down in tears, causing low-life Povich to comfort her, while glaring angrily at the man. When the man sincerely stated that he was sorry the girl was upset, Povich responded contemptuously with something like, You should be upset!! Why, because he told the girl the truth while her scumbag mother had lied to her for fourteen years? Its time to throw the garbage to the shark, and his name is Maury Povich."

I would've posted the whole thing, but character limitations and stuff.

People talking about it is trashy. Here are people dancing that they are not the father, and while people are doing this dancing we have fucking 2 year olds that don't know who their fathers are. That is horrible. And like at the same time, I kept watching the dancing. Like as a person who has been a CO , and know that father in kid life mean a hell of a lot. But still enjoyed watching these people dance. I don't know how this shows does . I think because the fans are so mean to the guy before they know if he is or not. Its like a take that so it like see there.

When I was actually more into Maury several years ago, I do recall one (white) woman who was there for....8 times total?
Kept testing groups of guys at a time, including (reportedly...) one dead dude.
The final time, she just gave up. No ultra-dramatic meltdowns, just a flat-out "I'm done."

...
As a sidenote, I find it telling that Jerry Springer and Maury both never did any grand final episode. Both just called it quits with zero fanfare, only letting entertainment news publications and shows talk about the show(s) quietly ending.

This girl had problems with her mother. She mentioned that she would participate in the show only if her mother wasn't present. Phil disregarded her request and surprised her with her mother anyway. Then, he acted as if he had done nothing wrong and labeled her as a brat when she rightfully reminded him that they had discussed this and agreed her mother wouldn't be there. This incident is just one of many examples. And then you can see that clearly set her up with the producer just so happen to be right there mic in hand ready to come on to stage just like that and back up Phil. Fuck that asshole.

I always found it funny in paternity test episodes when the dude would say he is never paying child support, attacking the woman like saying she sleeps around im not father, etc people boo. But then when he isn't the father they cheer and high five him and suddenly forget all the horrible stuff they say. Along with of course the dancing.

Then there was the domestic abuse episodes. Where they they put their partners into a coffin and go this is what happens if you keep beating your partner and that is supposed to cure/stop them.

Then there was those teenage women who were having sex and smoking weed or doing drugs. Like a 13 year old having sex with older men. And those would get sent to a boot camp or to a prison and that was supposed to stop them. I think weed is more accepted now then back then. But wtf and not going after those older men.
