Sometimes they even skip the "some other people misremember the same thing I do" part and say anything they misremember is parallel worlds.

Actually mental.

Pretty sure nowadays whenever someone says it, they're referring to the mass mental effect rather than the parallel world theory. Though, this is the internet after all.

Normal people do, yes. I'm talking about people who actually believe that them being unable to remember things is evidence of parallel worlds and there are people like that, just like there are flat-earthers. In fact, I would imagine a lot of them are also flat-earthers.

I really doubt more than an infinitesimal amount of people actually believe that. For the vast majority its just fun to observe these things that many of us remember differently, and then its fun to joke that its related to concepts we saw in science fiction.

Its not hard to explain that one. -stein is a common ending of last names while -stain isnt. So people just misread the name.

Plus, there were a few products that misspelled it as Berenstein.

I kinda get the Berenstain bears thing. Even as a kid I heard it pronounced different ways by different teachers/adults so that probably all bled into my thinking of how it should be spelled.

the only one that ever really got me is the Sinbad genie movie. I specifically remember this movie, and know it's not real is weird to me.

Doesn't the parallel universes/worlds thing have it's own name?

it's boomers blaming their fading memory on an interdimensional conspiracy theory.

And it's always come across to me as dodgy that the main "mandela effect" thing that the conspiracy theory is named after is basically an apartheid supporter's wank fantasy (mandela dying in prison).

It didn't. The Internet is just full of doofuses desperate for life to be a movie, and as such they generally care about the "univers iz collidinz" stuff instead of, you know, real stuff.

Nah. The parallel world theory is at least unfalsifiable. Flat Earth can be easily disproven with high school level science experiments.

I thought the Mandela Effect was a lousy idea and just people trying to justify their misremembering of things. Like, for Berenstain (sp?) Bears were so you used to saying and seeing stein at the end of a last name, if we werent paying attention we wouldnt notice because our minds are already clued in from the start of the word and the context that we wouldnt bother to recognize the actual spelling.

Then, in 2020, I found out a continuation of a show that I remembered didnt actually exist. I had remembered the channel, the host, even the general color scheme. None of that existed. I had remembered seeing a continuation of Unsolved Mysteries on the Lifetime network in either 2009 or 2010 and the host was Lance Reddick. I even remember the commercials on Lifetime that said that Lance Reddick from Fringe was the host. Lance Reddick has a memorable voice and look.
Now there was a continuation of Unsolved Mysteries at some point in the 00s, but none of it matches up with my memory.
The host was Dennis Ferino. I dont even know who that is.
The main color seemed to be red. In my memory, the backgrounds were black and blue.
It was on TNN/Spike/whatever it was called. I didnt watch that channel.
I normally just assume my memory slipped, but theres no way to confuse Lance Reddick with Dennis Ferino.

I dont think it has anything to do with parallel worlds or anything, but I wonder how and why my brain had this memory.

But that probably did happen. Your mom going off her memory and your pronunciation took a guess and was wrong. And the human mind connects conversations about an event with the actual event so the conversation memory fills in the blanks of the older memory.

About a week ago I learned there was a live action Popeye movie with Robin Williams back in like the late 70s or early 80s. It felt wrong, or I felt wrong. Idk. I was stupefied. It was existential. I grew up in that era and had never heard of it. I definitely slipped into a parallel dimension.

Jim Carrey called a guy with a monocle the monopoly guy in a movie that was #1 for it's opening weekend. For a lot of them it's probably that memory overwriting the older memories. You hear something, don't really remember the answer to well yourself, don't think about it, assume what you're hearing is correct, and now that's the new memory.
