Id rather they focused on high beam lights and drivers who spam them.

Like putting a damn timer on them, theres literally zero reason to keep them on outside of lightless dirt roads at night.

This is a terrible idea for the reasons already listed.

Plus, what's their definition of "speeding"? Is going 1 over going to get you in trouble? For how long do you have to be speeding? Some cars have you go faster when you apply the slightest bit of pressure compared to driving another car.

Plus do we really need to be stalked more than we already are?

So why make cars that go faster than the speed limit?

  • Speed limits vary. In town it might be 25. In a school zone it is 20. Outside of town it varies wildly from road to road and state to state, typically as low as 55 to maybe 85 in places. Some rare places have no limit. Which speed shouldn't they exceed?
  • If you mean limiting performance (power, torque) instead of a speed limiter, that doesn't just effect top speed. It also effects acceleration and your ability to get up a hill. If you limit cars to like 65 horsepower so they can't go very fast, they'll also take forever to accelerate and may struggle to make it up large/steep hills.

Honestly while I get going after excessive speedsters (Like 20+ Speed Racer MFers) could we do something about the assholes causing traffic by going way below the speed limit.

If there's nothing in front of you, and conditions are clear, why the fuck are people driving 10 or more below the speed limit? Get the fuck off the road if you just going to go at jogging pace!

There are plenty of emergency situations in which you may need to accelerate. Limiting a car to the speed you want it to go is actually dangerous.

Anyway, no, fuck this shit. If there's going to be government intervention here, it should be installing self-driving systems into every registered car, for free. Then voila, no more speeding, no more wrecks, no more tickets.
The truth, however, is that our local governments don't want us to actually slow down or be safe, they just want a way to better extract money from us. This is about elevating fines, not keeping the populace safe.

This is the correct take, I don't get all the negative replies to this comment.

If the technology is advanced enough to do this, really the car should be able to limit your speed. People have said "But what about emergencies" like that's some gotcha. If you have your emergency lights on I'm sure it would be disabled.

Basically this comes across as intentionally trying to engineer for increased punishment instead of increased safety.

This was the part that Inwas bothered by...
In the application, Ford discusses using cars to monitor each others speeds. If one car detects that a nearby vehicle is being driven above the posted limit, it could use onboard cameras to photograph that vehicle. A report containing both speed data and images of the targeted vehicle could then be sent directly to a police car or roadside monitoring units via an Internet connection, according to Ford.

They want the new cars to report everyone around them. You couldn't even avoid it by driving an older car if they start doing it.

What speed do you set? Speed limits vary too much.

Hell, there's a road I drive often that changes from 40 mph to 35 mph as you pass through a light.

But 40 mph is way too slow for a limiter.

Honestly, the existing limit of 120/140 mph in most normal passenger vehicles allows for the most variance while not preventing people from responding to emergencies. I guess 100 mph limit might be more reasonable. 80 would be too slow for some existing speed limits (in Texas, at least)

Also, if you disable the limiter with emergency lights, what's to stop someone from just unplugging their blinkers and speeding? "Oh sorry officer, my light(s) must've just burnt" or something

I get your point, but at the same time, it is kind of moot since people are going to find ways around it and it still doesn't address cars made before X date not being limited.

Unless you're proposing the government foot the bill for all registered cars on the road to be retrofitted with limiters? Which good luck, that government would get burnt the fuck down

Well, on the bright side, for once this wouldn't disproportionately hurt the poor *at least not for a couple decades*, since the poor don't buy new cars.

You could also have to rapidly accelerate around a sudden obstacle. You can limit speed, but setting that to the actual speed limit is the dangerous part.

This is also true. This wont help to reduce speeding or save lives. Its just gets the cops more money. You just get a ticket days later telling you you were speeding and need to pay

(Motor Authority) Ford is trying to patent a way for its cars to report speeding drivers to the police.
A patent application from the automaker titled Systems and Methods for Detecting Speeding Violations was published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Jul. 18 2024, and was originally filed by Ford Jan. 12, 2023.

Using vehicles for speed surveillance would make cops jobs easier, as they wouldnt have to quickly identify speeding violations and take off in pursuit, Ford notes in the application. It also means some of that work could be delegated to self-driving cars, which could be equipped to detect speeding violations, the automaker adds.

Its unclear what legal argument Ford would make should it try to implement this tech, as human police officers wouldnt be witnessing the alleged speeding being reported through the connected cars. Speed cameras already provide stationary enforcement of speed limits, but they can only issue tickets based on a vehicles license plate number because they cant confirm who is driving.

Topic title is misleading and posts aren't even remotely close to the article. Did anybody click the link before giving their opinion?

I'll tell you what would happen if they raised the limit. People would continue speeding over the safe limit. So if the safe limit is 60, they set it at 50 because they know people will still go 60 and there won't be any issues in theory. But if the safe limit is 60 and they set it at 60, drivers are going to start going 70.
