While I agree it is a bit odd for Doug to put his thumb in the top of his daughter's pants like that, there's nothing weird about putting your arm around someone for a photo. Plenty of people do that all that time with friends and family.

It's because, for many of them, their father, especially, was never there for them. Their father was either a raging asshole of a 'strict disciplinarian' who would as soon beat them as look at them or an absent alcoholic. If their father called them it was a ploy for money or to get them(father) out of trouble.

They never had a properly well adjusted male figure to model themselves after so they took all the wrong lessons to learn from a person like that and emulate them and expect everyone else to act like that.

I never had a good male figure growing up but I at least figured out how to be empathetic.

It used to be a thing like a hundred years ago when pictures were first becoming common place.

Part of that was because they had to hold the pose for quite some time to get the photograph. Something like ten minutes but I'm not at all sure about that figure.

It's also why they seem so dour, it's easier to keep a blank expression for that kind of timeframe.

I can't find it but there's a relatively well-known photo of an older couple from that time that started smiling and laughing, you can see how the movement messed up the final product.

Well, it's certainly more weird than forcing your children to hold AR-15's for a family portrait eh?
