I'm normally okay with most of what developers want to do, but I'll always hate missing shit.

Even if things are stage based, you should be able to go back to a previous stage if you want.

Which I guess are just missables with extra steps.

All games should have many missables.

As well as many either/ors. (Choose either one totally unique item, or another totally unique item. And make them best in class. Including eitheror characters)

You said it was a relic of a bygone era where games could be 100% in a few hours.

I pointed out that no, not really. You had once chance for things in various RPG's.

Why would you have a game with a chapter select, but not have the missables appear when you replay them?

Unless you are playing Vesperia 360, I dont think the post game dungeons are missable anymore

But yeah, Vesperia has old school game design, so you'll have to follow a guide to a T, unless you wanna talk to everyone on the planet every time you advance the story

You gotta visit a certain someone after a dungeon becomes available but before you complete it, and what's tricky is how much the game makes you absolutely wanna know what's gonna happen next so you don't even bother to look around

Anyway yeah missables suck. There's no personal bonus for finding a missable lol because how would you even know what you've found is missable content unless you looked it up beforehand. But it feels like shittttttt to find out you've missed one when you're just past it.

Suikoden recruitable characters, Persona 4 true ending- P5R true ending, SMT IV- they kinda plague JRPGS

But there's other examples like the Light Arrows in Minish Cap
Or any character with an ill fate in Danganronpa

My least favorite was in FFIX where, not only were there a TON of missables, one of the best weapons required you to get near the end of the game in under 12 hours. While its technically possible to 100% everything in that time, you absolutely need to be following a guide to do so, so your choices are A) end up at the end with obviously incomplete sets of items/cards or B) turn one of the best games of all time into a checklist. Fucking lame.

I agree this was an awful decision in that game. Small correction -- it's still possible to max out on cards even if that weapon is missed.

There is no 100% FF9. Even if you get everything possible in game, you still missed out on the fun you would of had playing the game normally and enjoying it without worrying about Steiners best sword that you wouldn't use anyway. Sure it has the highest attack value, but it also has the holy element which most end game enemies resist.

I hate the modern design philosophy that nothing can be missable.

It's not that I want to miss things or think every game should have missables, but rather it constrains designs in a way I don't like.

As its being mentioned I think FFIX flows perfectly the way it does and creating some sort of arbitrary "here's all the stuff you missed!" section near the end would be really shitty and it is how the game would have been designed if it was made today. It is how the rumoured remake will be designed.

They said missables are a holdover from a different time. As in, they're a thing that continues to exist now even though it isn't practical, but it was ok way back then when games were considerably shorter. The user didn't say missables don't exist anymore.

At least that's how I interpreted their post.
