Actually a pretty hard pick for me. None of the gens have all stellar choices for me. I guess I gotta with Gen IX for now. Quaxley is my boy, Fuecoco is adorably goofy, but Sprigatito is just ok, I'm indifferent to it.

Also feel free to take into account their whole evolution lines or just the base form if you'd like.

Based only on basic stage, 3 or Arceus Legends are best. 1 and 9 are next.

Might just give it to Arceus if it's included.

Gens 1 and 3 have the strongest base forms imo, no real weak links.

For final evos... they all have one I'm less keen on. Weirdly maybe gen 7 would be my fav on average, there. Or 1 again.

It's definitely 1 or 3 for base forms and I think 1 or 4 for final forms.

For final forms, Arceus is definitely no longer in contention. 3 still is, so probably 3 is best overall.

6 is the closest to all three being great. 1 and 5 are runner ups.

If we went by final evolutions, the answer would be 4.

5 > 1 > 2 > 4 > 6 > 9 > 8 > 3 > 7

gen 4 and 5's water type is kinda ugly and gen 3 and 9's fire types are kinda meh

3 is probably the best, but I am too nostalgic to 1 to accept any other answer.

My two favorite starters are Totodile and Cyndaquil, so going on base forms it's very hard to beat that. Considering full lines I think I still go Johto because Typhlosion rules, Feraligatr is great, and Meganium has even grown on me recently.

2 > 9 > 1 > 5 > 6 > 8 > 4 > 3 > 7

Full lines
2 > 1 > 4 > 8 > 7 > 9 > 6 > 5 > 3

The final forms have been largely disappointing since Gen 2 imo
A lot of great starters since (Tepig, Chespin, Quaxly) have been done so dirty

Also I'm very surprised by the Gen 3 love here. Hoenn might have my favorite set of Pokemon overall, but I always felt like the starters were the weakest part of it! I like Torchic and Grovyle but that's about it

I think 9 is narrowly the best overall. 4 is also solid and 3 has maybe the best first stages, but Torchic has the worst final evolution of a starter and a penile middle stage. Honourable mention to 6, which is good to great, bar Chespin, which is the worst starter and also has a godawful middle evo.

III is actually the one where I like all of the starters. Every other generation has a weak link or two.

I would go so far as to say not a single one of the nine Gen III starter members is great. Mudkip and Swampert are decent, Treecko line is okay, and the rest are bad! In fact, Mega Swampert and Mega Blaziken are the best designs to come from the Hoenn starters.

3 overall since I love that trio. But there's a lot of other good trios too. The Gen 1 starters are classic of course. Gens 7 and 9 are quite strong too. And I have a soft spot for the Gen 2 starters even if they suck in battle.

1 and 4 are the only two where any of the three have an argument, I think. All others have at least one dud imo.

Gen IX for me. Sprigatito is the only grass type I actually like. Fuecoco is amazing, and their special abilities are fantastic. Plus I like how unique their type combinations are as a starter trio. And Fuecoco is awesome.

I'm fucking blind and didn't notice Legends Arceus was an option Decidueye and Typhlosion are both in my top ten Pokemon overall and Samurott is just barely out my top 50. And luckily I think their alternate forms all hold up compared to their regular forms. I might prefer H. Samurott and just barely prefer H. Typhlosion (ghost is best type)

Gens 7 (what I voted for) and 9 are close runners up. Gen 1 would be if I wasn't inflicted by Charizard fatigue. Sorry I try to be unbiased to it but alas

I think I go 8? Grookey is by far the best grass starter, and the bunny is pretty great too.

1, 3 and 4 are all pretty solid across the board

Gen 1 by an insane amount honestly. Most starter designs are iffier than they should be.

Gen III is the best!!!

But that also might be because I grew up on Digimon and Blaziken is clearly a digivolution.
