Washington An "unknown and unauthorized third party" has gained access to two dozen depositions of witnesses tied to the various investigations into former Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, CBS News has learned.
The leaked materials are part of a civil defamation case filed by Chris Dorworth, a lobbyist who is close to Gaetz. These materials include the sworn deposition of the minor with whom Gaetz allegedly had sex.
According to a source familiar with the matter and an email viewed by CBS News, the person who gained access went by the name "Altam Beezley."
Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. The New York Times first reported on the alleged leak.
Gaetz was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee and Justice Department, though federal prosecutors declined to bring charges against him last year. The Ethics panel was looking into allegations the former congressman engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, among other accusations. But Gaetz resigned his seat in the House last week after President-elect Donald Trump announced he had selected the Florida Republican to serve as his attorney general.
Because Gaetz is no longer a House member, the Ethics Committee's jurisdiction over him has ended.

At this point, Gaetz has to be sweating a little. It's pretty self evident that some people are pissed off about this and have zero compunction making sure it gets into the hands of reporters.

My suspicion is some folks on the Ethics committee are legit furious about this and re making sure the report gets out there.

Some of these people are probably legitimately morally revolted by Gaetz.

What i'm hearing is that a lot of republicans are not going to vote in favor of Gaetz so his nomination will be dead. Not just a handful, multiple handfuls.

And if that happens and there is infighting because they don't actually want an unashamed piece of shit to be AG against Trump's wishes, I say we just sit back and let it happen.

So this report getting out there would be fantastic.

So I heard 30 republicans, but no names, yes, and all stuff said "behind closed doors" so it could be nothing. Because Republicans have no shame.

I'm curious to see which way this will go, but it is right, you can never bet on a republican in politics to ever just do the right thing, even if they've said as much to others.

But yeah I want this report out. And if MTG wants to leak all kinds of shit as a result, turning this shit into even more of a circus, awesome.

I suppose because nobody smarter than I has brought it up and no one is going "who cares if they don't release it" I guess this isn't something that could be released via a FOIA request?

A hacker has reportedly accessed a file containing damaging testimony about former Florida Congressman and attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz, including sworn testimony from a woman claiming she had sex with him at age 17.
According to The New York Times, the information was downloaded on Monday afternoon but has not yet been made public.
The material, which includes 24 exhibits, comes from investigations carried out by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the House Committee on Ethics, the latter of which is due to meet Wednesday to decide whether to release the material it has gathered.

Gaetz isn't particularly popular among Republicans, especially within the House (who apparently celebrated when he resigned his position) so I could see them letting this leak so in order to give the Senate grounds to not vote in favor of his confirmation and not look like they are completely denying their God-Emperor.

The issue being is allegations against Gaetz might make Trump double down. Sexual misconduct allegations are something he takes very personally whenever it comes up.

Don't forget when the Tara Reade stuff came out, and people were saying he was gonna rebrand as the MeToo candidate, he just went "Biden should fight this, women always lie!"

My meaning is that it likely won't lead to Gaetz withdrawing. It doesn't mean we don't still fight him

And now his resignation means he gets to dodge the investigation being officially released, and still gets to take his senate seat next year
