Id say no just for the fact many people arent going to associate him with being a pirate like they do Blackbeard, Black Bart, Captain Kidd (can be argued yo be privateer) Charles Vane, Anne Bonney, Mary Read and so on. And on that note the one who should be ultra famous is probably mostly unknown in the west and thats Ching Shih. Seriously look her up.

Side note I really miss the Starz series Black Sails. It was so well done. Im a sucker for pirate stuff anyway and I generally like a lot of the HBO and Starz shows anyway but damn that show was good.

Columbus was many things, all of them bad, but a pirate was not one of those things

this is true, but thats part and parcel of being a conquistador. He didnt make it a habit of targeting ships in of themselves the way pirates typically do

He discovered America is what he did! He was a brave Italian explorer and in this house, Christopher Columbus is a hero! End of story!

I just watched that Sopranos episode like a month ago on a rewatch on an off day where they were rerunning the whole series on HBO.

I never like Columbus! In Italy, Columbus is from Genoa. They look down on us in Napoli!

Very nice

In the US, it's undoubtedly Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, as he's been a fixture of adventure/romantic fiction since shortly after his death. I imagine the answer will differ by country though.

I would argue Blackbeard since hes pretty much the inspiration for every stereotypical portrayal of pirates
