Incorrectly

Funny story; when I was in fourth grade I was in a city wide spelling bee against a lot of older students. I remember having a lot of trouble with one particular word - enormous. I kept spelling it as enourmos, so before the bee I focused on that word until I had it down.

The day of the bee comes, what the heck are the odds that my very first turn I get "enormous." This was exactly the moment I was training for, and I was fucking ready to knock it out of the park. I say it exactly right... and the hear, "I'm sorry; that's incorrect."

I left to sit with my family, absolutely shocked. I was almost positive that I said it right. But the again if it was one that I had trouble with then maybe I didn't after all. A couple turns had passed and my concerns only grew stronger, so I finally spoke up and told my mom that I was right. She had a word with the judges, they replayed the recording.. and as it turns out, I FUCKING NAILED IT.

At this point the bee had gone on for several turns without me, so basically the whole damn thing was in disarray. But they let me back on anyway and I continued for several more rounds before finally being knocked out in the top four. Felt really proud of the applause I got from the audience.

But in retrospect I'm wondering how the HELL no one among a whole panel of judges and an entire audience realized I was actually right. I wasn't speaking quietly or incoherently.

Cool story, Keyblader. Seriously, that's like some movie shit! Crazy no one caught it until you said something.

I used to work Master Control at a television station on overnights, and one time I had to write a crawl stating that we would be doing tower maintenance at a specific time. I had someone call in "I just wanted to let you know that you spelled Maintenance wrong". I thanked her and changed it, then she calls back like two or three minutes later, "Sorry... I don't mean to sound like a smartass."

I used to have trouble spelling "schedule", but then I started pronouncing it like Captain Picard and that makes it easier.

I always thought there was a British and American way of spelling it. Wasn't sure which was which but I always been used to spelling it Guarantee.

Plenty of words I can't spell, but the ones that commonly get me are psychic and nausea
