You can read synopses for characters you've encountered, but in general, you might want to either play the first two games or read cliff notes of their stories. There's a decision early on that can help decide certain things that did or did not happen in previous games, so you'd probably get more out of that if you know the weight those decisions really hold. (I believe you face those choices after the tutorial area of White Orchard, yes?) Just my two cents, though. I had only played a little of TW2 before tackling TW3 and it didn't really hamper my enjoyment of the franchise too much...'cause TW3 kicked that much ass. --- Take me down from the ridge where the summer ends And watch the city spread out just like a jet's flame ... Playing TW1 would actually feel like homework... I'd just read a synopsis of that one. TW2 I actually enjoyed the gameplay and in some ways even preferred it to TW3 (more preparation and puzzle solving, especially for bosses), so I'd recommend playing it. However you don't really need to know the story of that game; it might hamper your understanding of a couple of subplots but not really the main story. --- @('_')@ ... Copied to Clipboard!

I have zero knowledge of the first two games and loved Witcher 3. It's probably the best game of the PS4 generation. --- Save for your doomed future ... Copied to Clipboard!

My understanding is that the books and show provide additional lore as well. It's a multimedia experience. I've only watched the first 3 seasons.
