Couple nights ago I dreamt I was at an old previous job which was at a muffin factory. I was around just doing my thing and then all of a sudden it hit me. I asked myself "Hey. Why am I working here still? Don't I have a much better job right now? I need to get out of here".

I don't think I ever gained the level of awareness where I knew I was dreaming while dreaming, though.

That's lucid dreaming.

You can learn to do it. Can be a very nice feeling.

I've been on the cusp of it where I realize things aren't making sense, but I always wake up right afterwards.

Yeah, had a dream I was eating a giant marshmallow and when I woke up my wife had left me

Yup. Its wild.

I occasionally become lucid, but one of two things inevitably happen. Either I get too excited that it happened and wake myself out of the dream, or I get attacked by shadow demons and it becomes a nightmare.

You always know it isn't real. Unlike standard dreaming.

I've had the full "I know I'm dreaming and can now kind of control it," a few times. It's very rare for me, though. Even then it's rarely perfect, like I had to run around to build up speed with arms outstretched before I could fly.

I have that kind of realization pretty regularly, like "wait, I don't live/work/attend school here anymore", but dreams tend to get unstable when I do, especially if I try to change or manipulate anything.

Frequently. I have the occasional sexually charged dreams, and it usually happens at some point that I stop myself because I think "wait - I have girlfriend, right? Yeah, I do. I can't do this."

I used to practice lucid dreaming. Never got to do it on command but a lot of nights I become aware for a brief moment and I alter the dream somehow before I lose awareness again. Most of the time I go "Oh, this is wrong, I'm probably sleeping" and then the dream starts a completely new scenario, kinda like changing a TV channel.

There are some recurring dreams I have where I've lost track of how many times I've had them because I keep resetting them while inside the dream to get different results, but whenever the dream resets I forget I'm asleep too so things play out mostly the same. One night years ago I had a recurring dream loop like 5 times while I was asleep, I was super confused when I woke up.

As I get older, I dream less and less, but almost every dream I have I realize that I'm dreaming.

I have a recurring dream that I'm driving a car that's way to small for me, and all I can do is move my hands and feet to steer and control the pedals. But I'll realize it's a dream, and usually am able to wake myself up from it.

As far as gaining self awareness, usually not. Most I'll get is when I was younger I'd have a dream I was hooking up with a classmate I've never considered attractive, then see them the next day and think more fondly of them.

I'm saying if it ever morphs into a lucid nightmare. Then you know you're trapped in a frightening, horror movie-like situation with no escape until your dream shifts again or you wake up.

You still might know it's not real, but your mind can still pull shit on you to terrify you. After all, who knows how to better scare you than you?

My brain is broken because I fucking love most of my nightmares even though I hate horror while I'm awake. Usually it's the dreams I have when I'm having a fever that really shake me. Just constant abstract sensations that seems to last forever.

One of my favorite recurring dreams is a nightmare where it's "me" trying to kill some hulking brute monster and so far I've never managed to win. I always become aware at the end and get annoyed and reset it to try something else, lmao.

All my dreams have been lucid for as long as I can remember. Didn't know it was unusual for a long time.

Same! I find them exhilarating and entertaining. And there's always some tiny piece of me that holds on to a sense that I'm not going to die.

For me, the real nightmares are the dreams where I'm repeating some monotonous task, like carrying boxes back and forth. Those make me absolutely miserable, and I always wake up cranky af.

I've had a few lucid dreams where I was able to float/fly a little bit after realizing it was a dream world. I couldn't figure out how to control it very well though, it was like being in zero gravity while not in outer space. I could also summon people/objects, which I had more control over.

I've also absolutely have had sex lucid dreams. I can't get laid in the real world so my brain does it in the dream world.

I thought I woke up like 4-5 times in a row once, turned out I was just dreaming. Eventually I was like, I should go upstairs, that will prove I'm awake. and I did after I went upstairs and realized I was still dreaming, I woke up for real after that.

Right before all that, I kept levitating above my bed and slamming into the wall, like 4-5 times beor that too.

It happens a bit. Most recently I was in a big gym and they had rows of tables and people eating at them like how it used to be at my grandparents house for holidays. And I saw my deceased grandfather, and in my dream I told myself well this obviously isnt real because hes not alive anymore.

Yeah even when I'm terrified of whatever is happening in my nightmare it doesn't matter because when I die or whatever the dream just changes to a different person or new dream entirely. Free endless entertainment. I never have "boring" dreams like just aimlessly driving or doing some monotonous task for whatever reason. It's like watching random cutscenes from random games or parts of random movies/shows that don't exist, except I'm following one of the actors around.

I've done that a few times too. That fucked me up because on the third wake-up I was dead sure I was awake, I remembered the last two layers, and then I fucking woke up AGAIN (4) and got so angry that I woke up for real and then doubted it for a minute.

I've heard it's impossible to read in your dreams due to a certain part of the brain being shut down when you're asleep.

not true. Ive read in my dreams. But I dont remember wtf it was.

i've had once where i went "this is a dream"
but it wasn't so much a lucid dream
it was more like when in the movie Spaceballs they go like "let's check the script" but it doesn't change the nature of the movie itself

Yes! Im extremely lucid in my dream. When I have nightmares, my dream self starts yelling, which makes my real self wake up yelling from that bad dream.

Oh! Ive also been aware like hey Im dreaming now, and Ill start flying like Peter Pan just entering peoples houses from the second floor windows lol, its awesome!

Nope. My brain has mercifully given up on dreaming, or else mercifully purges my dreams as soon as I wake up.

I did have one dream a month or so ago, but before that, it's been years.

I have 2-3 times but I always get too exited and wake up before I can actually do anything. :(

I've managed to do it, but not "really". There's a Batman episode that taught me about this, so I tried in my dreams, and it was more that I could form text than actually read it. Like, the transcription process in reverse.
