It's time for another version of this topic again! I make one of these every couple of years or so (last one looks like June 2021 according to LFAQs) as I try to expand my musical bubble. I don't know why, but I've always found it easier to listen to female vocalists. Maybe the vocal range is more acoustically pleasing to me? Maybe I'm just a down bad simp? Who knows! Not me, it's just been like that for a while now and I just lean into it. Plus I just like sharing what I like. Only rule is that the song has to be female-fronted, at least 50% and not just a feature.

I'll try to do at least one writeup a day so that you can kind of get a feel for my tastes and then you can give me your recommendations and I'll listen to them too (and hopefully grow this playlist). Just throw them all out there whenever, if they happen to be on my list I'll just jump to them in the writeups. Since these are all (imo) bangers it's an unranked list except for the top 20, which are my top-top tier never skippers.

My heaviest genres are (pop-)punk and rock since that's what I grew up with, but there's a little of everything in here. Except country. That's extreme hard mode for the recs (which is NOT a challenge. I'll be disappointed, you'll be disappointed, no one wins. Better to just avoid). Other media influences my choices here too, if I draw a connection to the music through a game/show/movie it sticks with me a lot easier than it would on its own.

Also if you try to psychoanalyze me with some of these, I promise I'm in a better place now! Also also I'll keep hornyposting to a minimum. Probably. Fuck Fandom.

Clash at Demonhead - Black Sheep [indie rock]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAut3N1uZuI

Hello again, friend of a friend, I knew you when
Our common goal was waiting for the world to end

Is this just an excuse to get Metric on here twice? Maaaaaybe. Also shut up. This is the only cover on the list, but it's one that I actually prefer over the original. Though I guess this is weird case of original vs cover but whatever. Envy Adams is also peak Brie Larson and I realize I'm already breaking my own rules but those boots woke something up inside me.

This to me is the baseline for my musical tastes, it's a perfect song. And if you cover it, I will absolutely judge you harshly for it (another on this list has a good one even). Obviously being in SPvtW helped burn this one into my brain, but I think even without it this would have been an all timer for me.

Kayleigh Goldsworthy - Boomerang [folk]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGNXqMO6nLk

Just when I let you go / Just when Im feeling free
Then you come out of nowhere / Back to m

I saw her open for L.S. Dunes and by the end of her set I jumped in line to buy her vinyl. She described Dunes as if you dropped acid (obv), and the guy before her as a smooth glass of whiskey, but her style was more 'that edible you took an hour ago and completely forgot about' which absolutely tracks. It's both light in sound and heavy in material, something that rang very true for a long time myself.

And the music video is her being chased by Ghostface wielding a boomerang. That's like a boatload of bonus points right there.

Veruca Salt - Seether [grunge]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jC9AUR-iTo0

Can't fight the seether
I can't see her til I'm foaming at the mouth

This is probably one of my earliest memories of edgy girl vibes playing on the radio and it pointed me in this direction ever since. That feeling of a simmering rage sitting just under the surface is something I think a lot of people can relate with. Catchy, poppy, grungy, a combination of things that makes this infinitely relistenable.

I might be pulling this out of my ass, but I'm pretty sure the band Seether is named after this song. Which should go to show you just how wide a net this song relates to people.

Leah Kate - Alive And Unwell [pop rock]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnoBLyrOa7s

Yeah Im alive and screwed up / Ruining everything I touch
Im a hot mess but guess what / I dont give a fuck

On the other end, this is probably the encapsulation of the 2020s edgy girl vibes. It's an aesthetic that resonates with me wholly. Coming in at just over two minutes, it also proves you don't have to pad the runt time to be an earworm. This wasn't the first song of hers I was introduced to (that would be 10 things I hate about you) but I think this is her best.

11. Ennaria - Monstarrr [metalcorehyperpop??]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kynlDfcxnM

Drop an oxy / feeling foxy / Thick eyeliner like I'm Boxxy

I did not have Boxxy making it into a 2024 bop on my bingo card, but here we are. This is probably the newest big addition to the list, and I don't really know how to explain it properly. But if you're still with me after this I think we'll be fine from here on out. During some algorithm spiral over the summer I got given this song and was blown away by it. And it is also her debut song apparently (she's since released two more, which are also great) and on my wrap this year, this was my number one played song.

Screamy bois were my favorite in my teenage years (From Autumn to Ashes being one of my favorites, who I saw live again last year and was still great), and now screamy gorls are practically an instant favorite for me. So this is the first of several, fair warning. Have to have an actual voice to back up the screaming though! Which this fever dream of a song definitely does. Her growl is on point and I'm kinda surprised she hasn't blown her voice out with how hard she goes on some of the verses.

I think what draws me to Ennaria though is just how diametrically opposed the genres she mashes together are, but how well they end up sitting with each other. Like I said, she only has three songs currently so I don't feel right pushing her into the top ten (yet), but I have been listening to her almost too much lately. And there's nothing else out there like it that I've found in my travels.

I also have no idea what genre to ultimately classify these as. I've just been pulling the consensus from last.fm usually, but there is no real consensus here. Kawaiicore, maybe? Is that a thing? She is obviously inspired by Harajuku fashion at least. Either way, the mixing of all the different clashing imagery and sound is just so unique that it sets it apart from everything else around right now and has drawn me in completely. I am fully aware this is not going to be for everyone, but if even one other person adds her to their lists I'll consider it a job well done.

The music video is also it's own acid trip, but has small changes to the flow of the song I don't particularly like, but you definitely have to at least try to watch it. Monstarrr Music Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNB4ucAvJ8g

And these are her other two songs, which have the same set up of innocuous other pop genre mixed with screaming.

Show Off:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xf5B5SNTQg
Man hating, Animal hating, Children hating (Ennaria?), Neurotic mess (Hi Ennaria~!), Demonic

Lauren Mayberry - Sorry Etc [alt rock]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq5vUoU4-Rw

It's only wrong if you do it and you get caught / Don't cry, we're just getting to the good part

This is the lead singer of CHVRCHES (who I'm not a huge fan of), but I saw her open solo for Death Cab/Postal Service and she was really great there. Really great Like A Prayer cover, but this was the song she closed with and I couldn't get it out of my head. I don't think it's released on any album yet so the only way to listen to it is from live recordings.

If she keeps this kind of energy through an entire album, I'll definitely be a bigger follower. For now though, I always love when this one comes on. Another short, sweet, full energy song.

doechii - Spookie Coochie [rap]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN0c88XN7eU

By the time you hear this, I'll have taken on another form
The way I've been snapping, y'all gon' end up my children of the corn

Rap is a genre I have a severe hit or miss energy with. Not anywhere near what I have with country, but I do find it harder to find something I like in it.

A good way to do it though is lace your entire song with horror movie motifs. I wouldn't recommend listening to this one at work because it is also incredibly sexual, but that just makes it even more fun when she's dropping Freddy vs Jason references.

Great flow also helps. Having listened to a bunch of her other songs, none quite reach this level, but she definitely has the 'it factor' to keep me entertained in one of my less favored genres.

@Snake5555555555
Pale Waves - Fall To Pieces [indie pop]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0tD-2C9vsw

How long 'til we fall to pieces
It's too much to take / Are we about to break?

It was actually you Snake that turned me on to them in the 2021 topic! I've listened to quite a bit of them since then, but this has always been my favorite of theirs since I first listened to them back then. I love Heather's voice, which is always going to be a big deal in deciding the extent of how often I listen to a band in general. On top of that though, this is just a fantastically put together song.

I could very well use this song as the standard of what my musical tastes gravitate towards. There's also a personal connection here because the last time I made this topic I was just putting everything back together really and the lyrics here spoke to me. I use music as therapy a lot and for some reason this one in particular got played on loop a fair amount back then. Now it's graduated to one of my comfort songs.

@Johnbobb
Maya Hawke - Thrse [folk]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0m51gQADloo

She reminds me of memories / Sleeping off the growing pains.
When we were sea anemones / And spelling out each others names.

I love the contrast in this song between the lightness of the vocals contrasted against the rawness of the instruments. Folk is another one of the genres I don't have a huge catalog of, but I heard this at a friend's house once and was instantly gripped. And when they told me it was uma thurman's kid I was like "what." But yeah the distortion is something I don't really hear much in folk and it really caught my attention.

I'll admit that I haven't really branched out from here with her, because again folk, but now that I have another rec maybe I'll give her a deeper dive. This one song though has been enough to stay in the full rotation since the first day I heard it.

19. Orla Garland - Little Chaos [indie]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9jYAUaEZjQ

Pick me up, take me home / Turn me off, turn me on
I'm your friend, I'm your girl / I'm your little chaos

This is another 2024 banger, but was in my top 10 listened to for the year. The constant drum forward beat keeps you hooked from the very beginning and it just keeps rolling from there. The drop into the chorus is also probably my favorite bit from a song that came out this year.

This is another one of those songs that reminds me of a past relationship, for both good and bad reasons, but it's such a bop that it somehow wraps around to making it an even greater experience. Which I wish I could explain in better words but I don't think I can. It's like... I can fully recognize the toxic parts, but at the same time those parts also led to some of the best times? Shit's weird man. Brains are just wet meat with electricity running though it.

Anyway, this is definitely on the top 2024 list. Starts strong and is all rise. And who doesn't have room in their life for a little chaos?

Alsoooooo here's an older song of hers that in no way whatsoever hits too close to home and doesn't trigger an existential crisis every time I try to listen to it, also for some of the aforementioned reasons. Mmhmm.

Wet Leg - Chaise Longue [post-punk]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd9jeJk2UHQ

Hey you, in the front row / Are you coming backstage after the show?
Because I've got a chaise longue in my dressing room / And a pack of warm beer that we can consume

I do love me an anti-song. Post-punk is fantastic in that regard, but this one that still manages to be catchy and get stuck in your head regardless of its ability to make sense. Plus, bonus points for ripping a Mean Girls line as your main focus.

I'm not going to lie though, I haven't tried to listen to anything else from them because I'm afraid that will ruin this one for me. I consider this song almost perfect in what it sets out to do, but I also don't want an entire album of this vibe. And I'm also afraid that if it's too different from this that I also won't like it. So I'm stuck in this vortex of loving this track so much that I've basically left it as a standalone bop on my playlist.

Scene Queen - The Rapture (but its Pink) [nu metal]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbwYDg82KLQ

Fuck the fame / Queue the laughter
Listen up / It's the rapture

Scene Queen's whole gimmick is being provocative, but this is actually one of her more tame songs. The team up with MOTHICA is too good not highlight though. Seriously though, just lookup some of her other track titles. One is literally called 'Mutual Masturbation.'

In a lot of ways I consider Ennaria to be the next evolution of Scene Queen, but this one definitely holds up to being at the top of my lists. I love peppering the choral backgrounds with the little distortion into the verses and the build up to the screaming.

I love the drums in this one too, they carry the story of the song on their back. I'm starting to realize how much I really like drum forward songs. Between those and the lyrics telling a story of watching the world burn, I'm sure you can see how this landed here.

Caroline Polachek - Welcome to My Island [synthpop]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxgcz_6GKX0

Desire, I wanna turn into you

If you haven't heard of her yet, buckle up because Kojima has recently become obsessed with her so I'm expecting her to feature in pretty much every one of his upcoming games. For me though, this is like a literal siren song. The first like 30 seconds is just crazy enough on its own to make the list, but the rest of it holds up just as well. Great lyrics and power chords carry this one all the way through.

Another thing I've noticed as I'm going through and making this list is that I have quite a few songs that have a lot of stilted lyrics. I think that's becoming one of my calling cards recently for some reason. I don't know if it's a I really enjoy them thing or a there's been an upticks of great songs just happen to use them. This one has a great mix of the stilted ones as well as the melodic ones and they feed off of each other into being greater than the sum of their individual parts.

For real though I could just loop those first 30 seconds some days and be fine with it.

also also: hey hey hey HEY!

Daughter - Flaws [post rock]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1doM4kr9NI

*insert tortured scream here*

You don't always need lyrics to be a banger. Just a great instrumentals and some melodic... I don't even know what the term for it is... wordless singing? The voice is definitely making like choral sounds, but they're not words just voice sounds.

I was introduced to this one in a very emotional scene from Life is Strange: Before the Storm and that entire scene is burned into my soul. I'd describe this song as 'hauntingly beautiful' just from the song alone, but with my attachment to the scene its in kicks it up quite a few notches.

20. Hey Monday - Homecoming [pop punk]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU0fQIezoK0

Descending, I'm spinning / Lost all defense
How could you swallow me again?

When I say pop-punk is my favorite genre, this is what I'm talking about. I can listen to a song of this ilk and instantly be transported back to my teenage years. A garage party with this thumping the speakers just feels right, you know? I've always felt like Hey Monday kinda got lost in the shuffle and never really get the laurels they deserved. Not from a lack of talent though, because let's pour one out for Cassadee. She went from this perfection to going on The Voice (and winning I'm pretty sure) and transitioning into country full time. FOR LIKE 12 YEARS. Good news though, she realized country was trash and came back home (get it?) to pop-punk as of last year in a solo capacity. I don't think it hits the highs of Hey Monday (yet), but there's definitely potential there.

As for Hey Monday in general, they are the purest form of pop-punk. I mean, just look at that video. It drips scene from every single pore and I'm here for it. Uptempo from the jump and high energy emo lyrics are pure dopamine for me. You don't know how much it warms my heart to be in the middle of a third(?) pop-punk revival right now. I have pre-purchased 2-day tickets to the DC Warped Tour with no announced bands just in the hopes of getting to see some of these guys again (they played the WWWY show back in October so the dream is well enough alive).

If I had to pick my second favorite song from them it would be How You Love Me Now - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzBruRwBltE - which is another venomous song that's so uptempo it sounds bubbly. As you've probably gathered by now, I love when there is clashes inside the song itself on how it should be taken, which is of course another reason why I love HM. Never die out again pop-punk, I beg you.

And since I mentioned it, this is from her pop-punk return: Almost There -

I'm not gonna try to go off of your tastes so far (mostly because I don't recognize a lot of them by name), but I'll post something from what has become my favorite female-fronted band.

Also most of Wet Leg isn't to my taste, but Wet Dream (from the same album as Chaise Lounge I think) is another good song by them if you were gonna hear more than one.
