"Smart" features will be the death of us.

Just because they worked with phones doesn't mean that every appliance and electronic needs to be "smart".

There are use cases for it but most of not all of them are unfriendly to users.

Wrote an application some years ago that's basically tied in for this sort of thing: you fill out a checkbox and the utility company credits you a little off the bill in exchange for throttling the machine remotely during peak hours. On paper, innocuous. In implementation and retrospect maybe a bit insidious (you could override it, then, I don't know if it's still in use)

Conceptually it's all good, if very consumerism focused (e.g. the archetypal "fridge tells you you need groceries automatically" that nobody's actually implemented ever when it comes to this sort of thing)

full disclosure Im an app developer for an appliance company

i think this is very stupid, but wouldnt it stand to reason that certain features of an appliance (like remote start) require an app/wifi connection

anyway our numbers show people do not give a shit about appliance apps and just want their stuff to work so adding any extra steps like this just piss off paying customers like the guy in the video

and of course theres a much more limited shelf life of an app vs how long an appliance is supposed to last

no you just need a remote like a tv

but what this wants is the guy to connect his DISHWASHER to a Cloud after having made an account and therefore connect through his internet

for what? how is remote start even useful for a dishwasher?

This is how I felt when I recently got a new TV. It has so many Smart features that just get in the way.

It's not useful for a dishwasher, but being able to remote lock can be useful for a water or power company

Our GE range/dishwasher can.

It's not useful for the dishwasher (though we did run it once through the app cause we forgot before a vacation), but it is nice to preheat the oven before we get home >_>. Especially since the wife bakes a lot now.

I too wish smart features didn't exist (especially for TVs) but if they're going to exist you might as well use them I guess lol.

The washer/dryer coming Saturday have smart features too but I don't think we'll use them as much.

1- Fill your kitchen sink with hot water, add a dash of washing soap (found in your local thrift store)
2- When the water is nice and soapy, place the dirty plate in the water.
3- Using a circular motion with your hand, vigorously rub a sponge (conveniently found near the dishwashing soap at said thrift store).
4- Rinse said plate off with hot water, and place in dish rack (also found in said thrift store).
5- Repeat as needed for the rest of the dirty dishes.

My mom once relayed a story to us how, when she and my aunt were kids, they would have to wash the dishes as one of their chores. When my mom asked my grandma if they could get a dishwasher, my grandma responded (paraphasing) "I already have two good ones right here!"

look, i know people "used to" (and of course many still do) wash dishes by hand. but dude in the video said he has 5 kids. do you know how much fucking time washing dishes would take every single day for a family of 7? even more potentially if they have pets

it's also way more environmentally friendly to run a dishwasher fwiw

you wouldn't, it's a pointless feature

but it does add a bullet point to their features list

Ewww. I didn't read the article but I can't imagine what benefit this adds. My dishwasher already has the ability to delay washing by a few hours. Why would I need it connected the cloud? What possible benefit does that bring? It's just one more thing that can break and a security risk.

I recently had to buy a new dishwasher. Had been worried about it cos all of them advertise smart functions with phone connectivity so I thought I HAD to have that too. Anyway, I bought a Bosch and when the fitter came I asked him about the smart function. He shrugged and said I never bother with that. so that was that. It's not required and not needed.

(What it can do is alert you to when the rinser or salt needs refilling.)
