I'm the opposite. I'm continually impressed by how good modern lighting is and how much better it makes everything look. Especially on a good tv that is actually calibrated properly. When people complain about interiors being too dark and not being able to see I always suspect they are getting black crush because they have some terrible picture mode like Vivid aka torch mode or Standard like so many gamers seem to enjoy with overly bright inaccurate settings that gives them terrible shadow detail.

I love the way the light filters through fog and through trees and clouds in modern gaming. I'm not saying there aren't games that don't do it as good as others but all in all I find it pretty damn impressive most of the time.

I just got done playing Ghost of Tsushima which is 5 years old and spent a lot of time going in and out of buildings into bright light and had no problems and thought a lot of it looked really good. My farming game handles day and night very well too, especially with clouds and the differences in light in the summer with the moon compared to winter when it gets dark earlier. The lights the tractors have really make a dramatic input to field work at night and again, depending on time of year and whether the sky is clear or not.

I'm continually impressed by how games handle lighting and it just keeps getting better and better.

game: adjust the brightness slider until the left icon is barely visible and the right icon is barely invisible
me: turns brightness up to like 90%

every single time

I hate when games ask you to set a brightness slider so some icon or symbol is barely visible, but then I can't see shit in game. Like, I get that it's a dark and grim world, or that this cave is super dark, but I need to be able to see to play the game, so that slider is going to make everything way more visible than intended.

I don't go that far, but I always fudge it so I can actually see a little bit in the dark. Lots of game directors seem to believe not being able to see is exciting and fun

I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.

Agreed. It's why I stopped playing the Dead Space remake. It's way too dark.

A lot of poor lighting is caused from something as simple as misplacing emitters. I remember one Blender tutorial where they said many games make the mistake of placing emitters inside of the room they wish to illuminate instead of clipping the walls.

The DS remake has excellent lighting though? This screenshot doesn't really prove much considering the original looks washed out as fuck. Both games still look great in motion.

In a past life, I was a stage lighting technician.

If every game looked like a Wes Anderson movie instead of a dark smear, gaming would be a bit better.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

This is my biggest gripe. I moved to PS4 and it was like, wow, HZD and MH World sure are pretty, but I can't fucking see the items or enemies I need to interact with. There's grass and bushes and bones everywhere making too much visual clutter. Even when the thing has a glowing marker on it, it's too hard to see unless I already know where it is.

"Realistic" lighting has pretty much ruined all different kinds of media. It's a bad trend imo.
