It changes some things, but most of those changes are just moving events around. The War of the Elves and Sauron was moved to coincide with the lifetimes of the only other relevant to the narrative 2nd age stories, Tar-Pharazon, Elendil, and their families. Galadriel's ambitious personality was heavily being developed in Tolkien's late writings. Barrow Wights, deforesting around Numenor's colonies, drama over lower born wives, wood elf and human love, alll concepts from other parts of Tolkien's writings even if applied to other characters. Adar was an invention, but we knew Melkor did that stuff in Utunmo. You're not gonna make a LotR show without Hobbits, and the Harfoots were really well done. It's open territory to create something, and they did great.

The only thing that can really be considered blasphemous is orc children, but I can look past it since it was so quick. The only other heavy lore deviations are mithril's origin and Gandalf. I can understand not liking how Gandalf was handled, but again you're not gonna have a LotR show without certain characters.

Those things are smaller issues than the incessant mystery box nonsense writing, "Gandalf" being a subverbal idiot savant for 80% of his screen time, and some of the timeline compression resulting in people traveling hundreds of miles in a day on foot.

The show is a failure and most Tolkien fans gave up on it during the 1st season. The only people still watching it are hate-viewers, YouTubers, and people with bad taste.

I'm more bothered by the fact that amazon is spending billions on this dumb show when those billions could be used for much, much better shows.

Wild that it's still getting viewed though, it's the most expensive cheap-looking show I've ever seen. Jesus those distracting halloween elf ears...
