I've been playing it a lot the past week or so and I'm enjoying it.
It has issues yes but there's still those moments of kino that are bittersweet because they make you realize what it could have been rather than what it is.

So you know how in open worlds, part of the appeal is going to an objective and finding a dozen things on the way there that you check out first?

Now imagine all of that relegated to hitting an icon on the map and just going straight to the objective without any opportunity to explore (and when you do explore, there just isn't anything). That's where Starfield fucked up. "It's outdated" "It uses Creation Engine" these just don't matter at all, given how people ate up Oblivion: But Now With Unreal 5 Graphics. Starfield cut out the part everyone likes in Bethesda games and replaced it with nothing.

Maybe it will get the Fallout 4 treatment where everyone says its mid, but then once they make cool mods it gets better. I still havent played it, but if Steam actually puts a big discount on it then I will grab it.

The issue there is the game is shit enough that a lot of the modders are ignoring the game.

And the expansion pack was like too little too late.

Which sucks because it touches on an aspect of the story that was actually really interesting, and it sounds like they made it more focused and centered around one planet but...

Feels like putting makeup on a pig

It's got potentially the worst open world design I have ever seen. It has literally all the downsides of open world design and streamlined the upsides out for whatever reason.

It was basically "But Why?: The Game "

The weird thing is it had the most man-made areas of any Bethesda game. The main indoor areas and cities to explore were not randomly generated. The problem is that there was so much of those same areas were copy and pasted that it didn't matter.

I was really keen on cheesing the stealth skill which required getting stealth kills... Guess it was kind of nice there was no morality system?

For what it's worth, my social media feed is primarily video games and other media. I've definitely seen Starfield discussed by people I follow - and I know I see Bethesda games on my feed even though the last one I played was Fallout 4 like 10 years ago.

This is the first time I'm seeing what Starfield actually looks like, assuming that these screenshots are from Starfield. I've never bothered looking up gameplay since I know I can't run it with my current PC build, and there's other Bethesda games I would rather get around to playing.

I know game development is incredibly hard but developers need to get the fucking memo that we don't want insanely large procedurally developed worlds. If your game is about exploration, it should be worth exploring. It should have intentionality to it. I want to stumble upon something interesting that I know was put there by someone with a creative mind, not something that was mashed together by an algorithm.

For me, it was the distinct lack of feeling..spacey. Why set a game so heavily in space and the unknown, and just make give it even less sentient variety than a Fallout game?

I played about 5 hours, and ended up quitting and going to replay the Mass Effect Trilogy.

I enjoyed it for a while, but it really felt like a retread of things Fallout 4 already did, and the exploration got stale fast. Only thing I really liked about it was the graphics.

It's mostly one tile on one planet, but you can clearly see, based on the geography, that the custom part is plopped down in the middle of the tile yet still has procedural zones near the borders. The biggest missed opportunity is that despite focusing on the 'mysterious' faction, they gave ZERO new ship parts. Like, they released metrics for the game showing that people had something like 27 million hours in the ship builder, yet couldn't even bother to have cool high tech weapons based on the research of the isolated faction.
