Might also be a good time to stock up on batteries. Get a radio too, if you don't already have one.

The fact that we went from economic upswing to having legit worries of food shortages and a new great depression on just 5 months is so wild to me, I've never seen a country destroy itself this fucking fast before and it's still eating itself as we speak, hatred and ignorance is deadlier and more addictive than any drug or booze on the market.

Yes. Two weeks of lentils, beans, tuna, and seasoning alongside a few weeks of museli. A decent lean meal generally but can become a staple that hits the basic essentials if supplies get cut off for alternatives and there's no power.

Not that I'll likely need it, being Australian and all means if America has supply shortages it'll likely remain there.

That said I believe Trump backed down from the tariffs before things got too bad. It'll be a lean few weeks/couple of months but not an unmitigated disaster.

Not any more than normal. Im not a prepper but my entire life Ive lived my life like my dad did and always had full cupboards of canned goods and a deep freezer full of meat. Its just how I thought all normal people lived who had houses. Its literally what cupboards are for yet anytime its going to snow people run to the grocery store because they act like they cant make it a day or two with what they currently have. Its weird.

Im really into home canning/preserving because I love eating that garden fresh taste all year round and not just in the winter so I have plenty of canned goods on hand. Im really not that concerned because I live in the #1 farm state in the U.S. and most of the stuff I buy is local. Could a few things get interrupted and I have to go without? Sure but nothing Im concerned about. If all of a sudden I need to give up bananas for awhile its not the end of the world.

As for other household goods I buy a ton of shit like shampoo, deodorant, clothing detergent, and toilet paper in bulk and I go years and years without needing it. I havent needed laundry detergent in over 10 years and still have like 5 big bottles. I havent needed shampoo or soap in like 3 years, deodorant over 5 and Im good with a family pack of TP for like a year at a time. Im good.

Oh, and 99% of Toilet paper is manufactured in the US. Some brands add eucalyptus pulp sourced mainly from brazil, but I don't think you're going to have to worry about stockpiling.

Panic buying only increases the problem.

For about seven years now I've been keeping at least a six month stock of non perishable foods. Saved my ass in 2020 and kept me from having to risk going grocery stores or getting sucked into delivery services.

Rice, legumes, oats, pasta, nut butter, and various canned goods are always on hand. I used to try to keep shelf-stable tofu and soy milk on hand but those are no longer affordable for me.

I actually invested in rechargeable batteries and a charger around the pandemic. I recommend it, especially if you have something like a controller or mouse/keyboard that uses AA or AAA. Theyre more expensive, but they allegedly last forever.

I would also recommend looking into smart lights because they save a lot of energy and they last for life, which eliminates needing to buy lightbulbs (how much will a box of light bulbs cost in two years?). Otherwise, I switch off the normal lights whenever I dont use them.

Countertop cooking devices allegedly use less electricity than a kitchen range, so investing in something like that would be smart before prices go up. Walmarts cheapest microwave used to be $15-20 and now its $55, although some things like toaster ovens are the same. I use a George Foreman a good bit to avoid using the range (because I think those have a 220v).

How bout USA Today? This was during the port strike.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2024/10/03/toilet-paper-port-strike/75495478007/

"More than 99% of tissue products used by Americans are produced in the U.S., according to North Carolina State's College of Natural Resources. And nearly 90% of U.S. tissue manufacturers use recycled paper to make their products, per the American Forest & Paper Association, the trade group representing paper and wood manufacturers."

"Tissue supply issues arise when consumers panic-buy and deplete the inventory of grocery stores and other retailers, which often only keep several weeks' worth of inventory in their warehouses.
People need to calm down and stop buying more than what they need to allow inventories to remain stable, Gonzalez said.
Some toilet paper manufacturers do use eucalyptus pulp, including U.S.-based Georgia-Pacific, Procter & Gamble and Kimberly Clark, according to the College of Natural Resources. Eucalyptus pulp, which is imported from Brazil, contains short fibers that make toilet paper soft and absorbent.
Even if access to eucalyptus pulp is limited, shoppers should at least be able to buy commercial-grade toilet paper made out of recycled paper, according to Gonzalez, who added that even commercial-grade tissue is not immune to panic buying."

Side note: I'm surprised I haven't got you on my ignore list, Were you in purgatory and let back in or something?

Bonus:

From TODAY
Which items will be impacted by tariffs? What experts say you should be buying now
(filled with lots of ads but here's this part towards the bottom)

"However, Bodge stresses that filling your cart in a panic is not a good strategy. "The cost of your toilet paper might go up 30 cents, it's exponential. I just dont think its worth going to Costco and buying 36 rolls, unless you have a big family and you would normally do that anyway," she says. "A lot of Americans are on a very tight budget, so these conversations around panic-buying really concern me. Because if youre living paycheck to paycheck, you cant rush out and fill your car at Costco, its a big hit on your monthly budget."

Basically, if you need a new small appliance, you should consider buying it now.

What you should NOT be doing is panic buying toilet paper and cleaning supplies.
