Say you accidentally click on a video of someone dying, and youre shaken up. Pop in Tetris. Itll help your mind not turn the traumatic memories into long term memories.

And it doesnt have to just be something violent. Anything really upsetting. The death of a loved one, getting fired, whatever.

Having grown up with the OG Gameboy the music of that game is ingrained in my brain.

I will be 90 years old someday and can still recall that song easily even if I haven't played Tetris on Gameboy in 70 or more years.

Without having read the studies in question or done any of my own research and instead just idly speculating, I'd guess that's kind of the point: Because the game engages the parts of your brain that would otherwise be fixating on the trauma and developing feelings of anxiety about that, it gives the rest of your brain time to process it more healthily.
