i'm forcefully dragging myself out of being a pokemon boomer. i'm no "genwunner" but i fell off hard after gen 4 and had a generally negative impression of the series after that.

gen 5 was cool, i liked it. hardcore players seem to really love it. i don't play pokemon to get my hardcore fix, dota exists. was still fun though.

my copy of sun got here before X, so i started playing.

this is genuinely awful. the density of unnecessary cutscenes borders on parody and it's really funny to think that some people defended replacing traditional gyms with whatever this is. i hear scarlet/violet are an even worse experience in some ways?

This doesn't answer why I also think S/M sucks, but had fun with S/V

I teach kids. None of them play Pokemon. But a huge chunk of my friend group of 25-40 year olds buy the new pokemon games day one every time and spend enormous amounts of time, energy, and money keeping up with the TCG and Pokemon Go.

I love the region and I actually like the Trials and Totem fights for being something different... But yeah, the constant cutscenes really drag the game down to a crawl...

I don't completely remember if the Ultra games fix that... I do like Sun and Moon way more than XY though...

Also ScVi has three story paths and one of them is just normal Gyms... One of the others is like Totem Pokemon and I don't really have a comparison for the third path...

Polemon is just a cheap knockoff anyways.

While I like the games story, my sole issue with the game was the amount of literal roadblocks they threw into those games. While it was something they had in the past, they did a better job of hiding those blockades through simple storytelling. Your forced to advance the story so much before the next area becomes available, and it really took me out of the experience.

It'd be forgivable if the story was interesting at all but no. You're basically not even the main character, you just follow her around.

Moon took me a long time to finish. I dropped it for a couple years then randomly decided to come back to it sometime after beating Sword (which did not take me long to beat). Violet took me years to beat too. I dropped it after 6 gym badges and 2-3 star badges and 4 titans. I came back because of the Switch 2 and somehow loved the game. The only other game that took me a while to beat as well was Pokemon Black. Dropped it for a few months then came back later and beat it. Everything I played before it I beat right away. I didn't play X or Y though. In fact, I was done with the series after Black which is why I didn't play X or Y and why it took me so long to beat Black. Finally got burnt out with the series. However. a girl I met on an online dating site talked me into getting super hyped for Alpha Sapphire which prompted me to buy a 3DS.

I like those games.

My tolerance for cutscenes is high. I tend to think of games as watching a movie where I direct the main character so a bit of storytelling downtime is fine.

I thought the games looked great for 3DS.

I liked the new Pokemon and the Island setting.

Totems were fun, and the challenges were at least an attempt to change it up a bit. They always ended in a battle anyway. They weren't substantially different from regular Gyms that had a puzzle component.

Team Skull are a lot of fun.

We actually got proper QoL stuff to help with breeding/training (not like the half-arsed attempt in XY): Transparent EV/IV, Bottle Caps and Hyper Training, Ditto with sought-after Natures, the Pelago was really useful.

I appreciate that it tried to do something different rather than gyms, but I wasn't a fan of the trials.

I hated sun moon and cannot get into them.

I enjoy X/Y a lot more. Megas are so much better than Z moves. but I do play randomised upping levels and trainer pokemon amounts

Being targeted at kids doesn't justify a game being poor quality.

Yea, I barely remember my play through tbh. Doesnt help that almost all the Pokmon in the main game were utter dogshit. So much so that I just imported my ash-geninja from XY and used it to carry me through the game.

The regional types gimmick was also kind of cool but barely utilized. And the main antagonist was completely and generally bat shit insane.

I played gen 5

I lost interest in Sun/Moon as well and never finished it. I did like XY and ORAS though

I tried to watch a Let's Play of S/M back when they released to see if they looked worth anything and after seeing the first 40 mins all be cutscenes I lost all interest in ever trying them.

Sun and Moon was where I started to accept that the series just wasn't for me anymore.

X and Y had issues, but that could be due to the jump to 3D. ORAS was more fun, though the Battle Frontier tease was more than a little annoying. At least there was the delta episode.

But Sun and Moon was when I asked "What am I doing?". The game just felt rushed. From trainers noticing you without turning around to the fairy trail captain literally admitting that she didn't have time to actually set anything up. The last totem fight is also just a short walk without any puzzle whatsoever.

At least the Elite Four is challenging again?

But ultimately I just knew the passion was gone.

One thing to note to any Pokemon fans, go play the romhacks. Opalo and Unbound for starters. A lot of them are really good, even if some of the fakemon aren't exactly good looking.

the best part of sun/moon is when you're at the elite 4 and the game still throws tutorials for basic shit at you

I liked sun and moon but wasn't a big fan of X/Y although I do like the Pokemon designs. Just couldn't bring myself to finish the story, just found it really bland.
