Made a new topic since the other one got derailed over personal issues and they can't seem to drop it. I made sure that won't happen again in this one.

The last I heard about the bill is that enough Republicans are voting no on it to obstruct passing it.

Today the Senate is voting on amendments to the bill before it goes to a final vote.

The bill extends the 2017 tax cuts (primarily for the rich) that otherwise would expire at the end of this year. Among other things, the bill includes major cuts to Medicaid which could result in millions losing their health coverage. It also raises the debt ceiling by $5 trillion.

The Congressional Budget Office is projecting the current Senate bill would add $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade, $800 billion more than the version passed in the House. Republicans are saying the CBO estimate is wrong because the cost of extending the Trump tax cuts shouldn't be figured in to the impact on the national debt for some reason.

Thom Tillis (R) of North Carolina voted against advancing the bill earlier because of how much it would cut Medicaid in his state. He was attacked by Trump on social media then subsequently announced he would not be running for re-election.

It's going to pass. There's no reason to expect good things to happen anymore.

Be ready to protest earlier than July 4 if the bill passes.

Its actually insane that we live in a timeline where a bill this obviously terrible is even being considered, let alone almost certainly going to pass

If/when it does pass, I only hope the voters get rid of all those senators and reps next year.

It'll be too late to save us from it, but at least give Trump less leverage to continue pulling shit like this until 2028.

The GOP wants you to feel defeated. Don't let them have that power over you. Local elections still matter. Midterms still matter. Many judges are still doing their best to stop Trump. This stupid bill is extremely hated, if it passes...I think protests will be bigger.

I expect the worst tbh. We can't have good things anymore.

The Supreme court have already stated that lower courts are not allowed to stop or block any of Trump's directives.

And even if Trump died tomorrow, the Supreme Court is still around, Republicans are still popular, America still wants this

a local election was canceled in miami, judges are being shut down by the supreme court and I fear protests will turn into blood baths within the 2 years

We're just saying to adjust your expectations. We've already lost and are well past the point of no return. At this point BEST case scenario is now what level of mitigation we can do to the damage.

And even that is hopeful.

Ive been curious this whole time what will happen if one of his nominees or bills doesn't get the votes. Now we may see what that entails but if all we have is all democrats against it and then Paul and Tillis and nobody else YAWN

Fair enough, but many lawyers and judges aren't giving up. So I suggest everyone else doesn't give up as well.

Think about this for a bit- huge protests happened recently. They can certainly happen again. Tesla and other companies have had huge losses. Don't let up. Things are working even if it's not the instant fix everyone demands. Sorry...but tough times can't just be gone right away. It's a frustrating thought, but a realistic one.

Maybe you need an internet break. Doom scrolling and doom posting so much isn't healthy.

It will pass. The "at risk" Republicans are hoping there will be enough voter interference to keep them in power.

Exactly but more fighting needs to be done right now. Unfortunately....too many defeatists, too many people won't do anything until it personally affects them, etc.

Organize and protest. At this rate....the July 4 protests need to be double or more compared to the last one.

Good idea. That's actually the reason I quit Reddit as well

It's one thing to know things would be very bad after the 2024 election, but it's another thing entirely to see it in action. Many of us have been preparing for at least a year in case the unthinkable happened, and I can't really blame people for the despair and cynicism unless it reaches the point of inaction.

Things are likely going to get even worse, but if it's helpful at all, these are the most incompetent buffoons I have ever seen trying to install authoritarianism. Their utter worthlessness is as much an impediment as our own willingness to fight.
