So this is the equivalent of going to the library and searching for what you want, as opposed to just having some random homeless guys show up with magazines at your doorstep every 30 seconds. This also isn't stopping teenagers from using parents' YouTube accounts to view content. I mean, this is just COPPA for 16 year olds.

Under the ban, teenagers will still be able to view YouTube videos but will not be permitted to have an account, which is required for uploading content or interacting on the platform.

For what it's worth, this seems like a reasonable compromise. They can still watch videos, but have no way to interact with people on the platform which is what this law is about

That's ancillary to the primary purpose, which is to remove or limit the algorithm's access to kids.

At least theyre sticking to their guns instead of giving exemptions. Now theyre truly the western Great Firewall.

Silver lining, Australia will notice an immediate uptick in computer literacy from the youth brackets.

This specific move has pissed off a surprising amount of people. Granted it's purely anecdotal but even a few of the older people in my social circle are now shitting all over Labor because of this.

Shit's going to hit the fan late November-early December when all the sites start demanding 100 point ID and/or biometric data to access, I don't think it's really hit the average pleb yet that the only way this ban works is if every website verifies you are an adult before signing in (and limiting search results until said verification is complete). They have no idea the massive headache and ID security risk barreling towards them right now.

Governments incapable of regulating social media properly so they go to ban it.

They never think of longterm implications, just bandaid fixes to appease whoever theyre trying to gain favour with.

Next election will be interesting and I hope we dont swing back to the libs...or whatever is remaining of them after the last election

TBH I'm not worried about that myself. I think the Libs are quickly dying as a political party at both the state and federal level and we've entered a period in politics where the conservatives have to completely reinvent themselves before they're in with a chance (I suspect the teals ballooning and forming some kind of party replacing the Liberals as the defacto conservative party will be the eventual outcome).

Given current global issues there's less than zero chance people swing back to the Coalition next election. Anything people are angry at Labor over is a policy the Libs are a thousand times worse on and actively advertise themselves as such because they haven't gotten the memo the year is 2025 not 1995.

But yeah, they never have forsight. They were actually shocked by the public sentiment of Gaza can you believe it! Not a single person I've talked to IRL approves of what's going on over there yet they're so out of touch they (at least the higher ups) were legitimately surprised. If they thought that was a surprise ooh boy they're not going to have a fun November/December.

It's honestly terrifying how quickly the world is just sprinting towards isolation, controlling identification laws and the government watching you 24/7 from the moment you go to sleep to the moment you wake up you will be tracked and information on your activities will be gathered.
