i don't want to rate Tales of the Abyss because user unknown_duck has nominated it three times but never rated a game, so here's Vesperia

Beat this recently. Good game, good pacing. Yuri is a solid protagonist.

On the plus side, it has Yuri Lowell, the Fatal Strike system is cool, and act 1 is a lot of fun. On the downside, the cast chemistry evaporates starting in act 2, act 3 feels completely unnecessary, the plot is pretty blah, the main antagonist is a total nothing, most of the cast feels woefully underdeveloped, some of the most important sidequests are missable with an extremely short window, and the DE release kept changing voices back and forth.

One thing about a good JRPG... keep the story memorable if you want it to stand the test of time. Outside of the few scenes everybody remembers, what else is there? At least the battles are still good enough to give this game a 6, but Abyss is better in every imaginable way.

Great game overall. Yuri one of the best JRPG protagonists. The last act is not nearly as good but it doesn't matter much to me personally.

The combat is one of the better incarnations imo, yuri is hella fun to play as. The story, yeah the gripes about the 3 parts are real. However, I think the overarching moral dilemma around yuri's vigilantism saves it, especially since it doesn't really pick a side (Both yuri and flynn achieve what they wanted through their own means). It's flawed but I think it's one of the better tales games.

Gameplay is fine, some weird difficulty spikes. I didn't care for the graphics or music. There's some very solid writing in there, but it's a bit messy overall and it doesn't commit to some of its solid character setups (I'm thinking Raven and Estellise). Yuri is as great a protag as everyone says.

One great thing about playing with the original Japanese voices (other than them being better imo) is no issue with voices changing in the DE version.
