Irresponsible Captain Tylor I really like; 26 episodes; sci-fi setting, but mostly it's absurdist comedy; very fluffy. Has a follow-up miniseries that kind of follows up on everyone "post-war wind down", but was supposed to bridge the series to the novel's sequel (where there's a zany road to peace talks, but another threat shows up creating complications)

Martian Successor Nadeshiko (the TV series, not the movie) is ... Similar. Fluffy absurdist comedy in a sci-fi setting; some Evangelion-like angst; massive amounts of 90s bop.

Bubblegum Crisis, the original OAV (6 or 8 episodes); cyberpunk yet mecha. BGC2040 (the TV series) wasn't that bad, but it is longer and feels padded out. The 2nd series, Crash, I thought wasn't terrible, but it's definitely "filler".

Here is Greenwood 6 episode miniseries about a year of a wacky boys school. It's not really wacky, and way more grounded than say Ouran High. I actually like the middle two episodes (festival episode, haunted house episode) over the 2-episode finale (which is a typical shoujo romance arc, but condensed).

Video Girl Ai is another old miniseries. Only 6 episodes, it uses what are now cliches and tropes. Ai herself is the main attraction and gets the most complexity.

Kodocha/Child's Toy angst/zany children's romance. It's not as adorable as Yotsuba or as wacky as Lucky Star or as shoujo as Nisekoi, but it's a good mix.

Bit surprised Azumanga Daioh wasn't on your list. It's very cozy slice of life stuff, so it might not be your cup of tea, but is animated real smoothly.

Kemono Mask will be the latest thing I'll mention; it's from the creator of KonoSuba and really has similar pacing (but it's a short 12 episodes).

You know, I'm remembering this morning that for a little bit before this topic went up I was reading Nana.

Got like 20-25ish chapters in before just kinda stopping and losing all momentum with it.

I wasn't really super into it (I would've gotten back to it by now if I was), but I'm still curious as to how you evaluate it now that I think about it. I guess that's not really a ringing endorsement but still lol

what if you were planning to watch anime, but the baseball game went 18 innings?

anyway that didn't happen today so i watched two eps of Hyouka.

i'll be honest, this is in the danger zone. i haven't dropped it yet because it's a good-looking show, and as a "mystery" i know it might take a little more time to get going. but i find my mind wandering quite a bit when i watch this. it also just makes me want to watch Haruhi again instead. For some reason, I was initially under the impression that Hyouka was a show about ghosts and I find myself thinking what if this really was a ghost show like i had initially thought? Or some aliens or time travelers...

also i remembered/realized, "hey wait a minute, i don't even like mysteries" and tbh at this point, finding out what happened to the faceless uncle was not a really big draw. the end of E5 was a bit better since they apparently dealt with this issue and will be moving on to other things.

i have liked slice of life/slower paced stuff in the past (Non Non Biyori, Flying Witch, Gin no Saji, etc.) though so i'll give this one more week to see if it starts clicking for me. also Chitanda's voice is like uniquely fun to listen to.

Eiko has a whole surveillance system around MC and even gives him a pair of glasses that has a secret camera under the guise of "make you look smarter." she's obsessive and shows hints of derangement.

anyway, i can appreciate how the show handles the tone shifts and the blend of humor along with darker subject matter. and there are a lot of cool looking shots as well like this

and whaaaaaaaaaaa confession at the end of E6?! not that i was super invested into a potential romance between the two but if something was going to happen, props for it happening sooner and not dragging it out. assuming their situation doesn't just reset next ep or something

I'm glad you're still enjoying Dark Gathering. I originally asked you to stick with it to episode 6 because, in my view, that's where it gains a direction. The early episodes had lots of just them stumbling across spooky ghosts but now they have a goal. Now I just have to hope you enjoy it enough to stick with it since you're past the point where you can freely drop it!

yea shows with longer ep counts are always a bit more questionable as to whether i'll end up finishing for me

watched 2 eps of Canaan before i knocked out last night.

i don't really like Maria...but all the other characters are cool

the subs for E9 of Haibane Renmei are messed up
