Not without the Game Genie.

I did, consistently. I completed that game. It is only 4 levels after all. But I failed a lot at first. Side note the AVGN video where he lands it with the power glove and his jaw drops I laughed so hard because that was my reaction when I first landed it safely after so many fails. Haha. Took me right back to the late 80's in junior high when I pulled that off.

I did. I played the hell out of that game.

Yeah the bulk of the NES era where the majority of all my favorite games came from that I played so much of was from like 1987 to 1990. 11 to 14 years old.

I think that is why I have such a big disconnect when I see where people constantly talk about how hard games like Mega Man, Mike Tyson's Punchout, Ghosts 'n Goblins and some of these games were and by no means am I acting like some elite gamer but I found many of them to be average difficulty and not that hard.

So it always weirds me out when people are like "I was the only one in my friend group who could beat it" or they say they still haven't beat it to this day or how is was some huge accomplishment. I think it is because they had to be a lot younger or something. Again I'm no elite gamer at all. Totally average. And there were games I found difficult like Ninja Gaiden and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Blaster Master. I completed them but they were difficult and took me a lot of practice.

So yeah I definitely think age plays a factor. I was 11 when Top Gun came out.

Are we talking about Top Gun? My grandparents' house had an NES with a bunch of games, that being one of them. The only thing I remember from that game was that I always had trouble playing it in general, much less completing a level, and the one time I did, I crashed when trying to land.

I assume having the manuals for all of those games would have helped save me a lot of headaches, but then again, maybe not.

I beat it to. My dad and Uncle showed me how to land. The game is pretty easy to beat if you cheese it by flying upward the whole time... Get the powerful missiles to easily kill the bosses. And yeah, it's only 4 levels.

And thanks for taking me back to the past with that AVGN memory. His stuff now is still occasionally great but back in the early days of YouTube it was all we had and he was at the top of his game.

The worst feeling was when it looked like it was going to actually land and then it just goes through and crashes in the water.

As a kid, it seemed random when I could. But when I went back to the game, it was super easy.

What I think people get held up on is the Up! Up! part of the landing. Most people will just hold down on the d-pad, because thats what makes you go up in most of the game, so it seems like that is all you should do. But you gotta look at the altimeter. During the landing, you have probably been told Slow down! a few times as well. So if you are going too slow, you wont gain altitude just by pressing down on the d-pad. You gotta also speed up enough so you actually do go higher.

Once I realized that, I dont think Ive failed a single landing.

Nope. Not once. Never saw the 2nd level because of it. Apparently there is a trick to it that makes it easy. I think AVGN figures it out in his video.

I did it twice I think. Never made it to the third level

I think there was a mission to do this in one of the PS2 Ace Combat games. I wanna say 5.

Not me, but a great memory.

My friend and I used to play Hard Drivin on Sega and for fun we came up with a trick at trying to jump the barn.
