I have 5 personal days for this year and like 160 sick days built up over time.
I am a teacher. Our sick days rollover from year to year, and we can save up a max of 5 personal days if you don't use them the previous year. And of course as a teacher I already get al weekends, holidays, and summers off. But I also never take days off during the year.

My maximum vacation balance based on my years of service is 432 hours. It is why I take 2 to 3 days off every month to keep below my maximum. I stay hovered around the 420 hour range of vacation. 75% of the year I'm on a 3 day weekend.

I also have a balance of compensatory time (comp time) from working overtime or holidays you can take time off instead of extra money if you want. We are allowed to keep 80 hours of that on the books and anything over 80 at the end of the month they just pay out as extra pay.

So at all times between my vacation and comp time I have 500 hours on the books. This isn't counting my paid sick leave which is separate and there is NO cap on that and you can just keep it adding up and up and up. We get 18 paid sick days a year.

Needless to say I get a lot of paid time off each year. Outside of people who are in teaching and get summers off i pretty much always get more time off than anyone I know. I actually have an awesome job. Good pay for the area and amazing benefits. Free/cheap insurance, 200% employer contribution to my retirement from what I put in. No complaints.

How do you guys save up that much? I accrued about 3 weeks' worth including floating holidays (changing employer next month) and would always go through it throughout the year. I think many places will cut off your time at around 80 hours or so, so it's bizarre to me that they let you accrue that much.

For me, it's all one bucket. I've done it both ways and it hardly matters to me.

But anyway, everywhere I've worked they give you 40 hours your first year, 80 your second, 120 your third and beyond, or some similar formula. It's always at the start of the year, so if you took the job and immediately got sick, you'd have sick hours. I mean, unless you didn't have the benefit at all, which I've also done.

The saving part is because they usually roll over up to a certain maximum.

For myself, I get 160 hours of annual leave a year. My balance was rising slowly since I generally use my annual leave to travel and visit family, but then COVID hit so I took very little time off for two years. Since then the cushion has generally stayed above 200, making sure I'm comfortably below the 240 cutoff as year-end approaches.

I currently have 135 PTO and 2 SL. I accrue about 16.5 PTO every month and a small amount of SL. A family health crisis is currently causing me to drain SL and use "vacation time".

We can only carry over 80 PTO each year, but we are paid for the forced cash-out.

If my math is right I have 23 days of sick time and 22 days of vacation time. That equates to 4 weeks and 3 days of sick time and 4 weeks and 2 days of vacation time. Not bad. Government jobs can be a good thing, I recommend it for any of yall even if it's just custodian work.

I think newer companies are bit more stingy with PTO but older companies have just grandfathered in their PTO accrual because new hires expect what their coworkers got when they first started
