Republican Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said his office is issuing criminal subpoenas to Roblox Corp RBLX.N, calling the video gaming platform a breeding ground for predators that puts children at risk.
In a video posted on X, Uthmeier accused Roblox of profiting from children while failing to protect them. They enabled our kids to be abused, he said.
The subpoenas will allow prosecutors to gather more information about the alleged criminal activity on the platform, including evidence related to suspected predators and victims, according to Uthmeier.
Roblox has long faced questions over childrens safety, a concern highlighted by a short seller report from Hindenburg Research in October last year.
The concerns prompted Roblox to invest heavily in protecting younger users on its platform by tightening messaging rules for children under 13, intensive content moderation and AI-powered monitoring.
In an emailed statement to Reuters, Roblox said it prohibits sharing images and videos in chat, uses filters designed to block the exchange of personal information, and is working to implement age estimation for all users accessing chat features.
While no system is perfect, our trained teams and automated tools continuously monitor communications to detect and remove harmful content, a Roblox spokesperson said.
Iraq banned Roblox late on Sunday, citing concerns that the platform enables direct user communication exposing children and adolescents to potential exploitation or cyber-extortion, and saying its content was incompatible with social values and traditions.
Roblox faces mounting scrutiny in the U.S., with multiple lawsuits, including by the Louisiana attorney general and an earlier case in San Francisco, alleging it fails to implement adequate safety measures and enables sexual predators to exploit children.

I hate that its Florida doing this but something does have to be done about Roblox

Remember that there was a guy on there doing Chris Hanson style rooting out pedos and he proved that there are actually alot of people on there that prey on children and he brought it up to the Roblox devs and they banned him in response

Reminder that the Republicans aren't doing this out of concern for the children or doing the right thing, they're doing it to set a precedent where they can use this same justification to go after LGBTQ+ people.

This one's pretty wholly justified. Roblox has a massive issue with being a vector for pedophilia and has willfully done nothing to stop or self-regulate.

Pedos have used Roblox as a platform to prey on children and Roblox has done nothing to stop it. Families have sued them and the extent of their response has been to set up an ai chatbot

The game is full of child predators, and Roblox banned the guy who was exposing them. They also banned anyone from using the banned guy's name in support of him, but Roblox did nothing with users who went by names that implied child-predator behavior.

Also notably, Master Card and Visa--for all their crusade against "harmful content" on Steam and itch.io--are suspiciously silent on the Roblox issue.

How did they do this? Isnt Roblox a game where kids make games or something? Is there a chat feature?

Oh, you trust Google Meta and Newscorp (among many many lesser corporations) with your 100 point ID including your drivers license and biometrics do you?

Because that's the only way to actually enforce an internet age limit.

I'd know, because that's exactly what's happening in the UK and Australia with their social media age restrictions. The only way to restrict the internet based on age is to verify the age of everyone on every single website. And the only way governments will ever bother to do that is to leave it up to the corporations to enforce.

These measures are also only a short step away from a police state where absolutely every single thing you say can be fed into an AI, tied directly to your real-world identity, and then incur direct punishment from the government when the AI flags something (we're already extremely close to that timeline as it is.)

The smarter and better way of handling this is to financially punish companies that do nothing when they are made aware of things like this. And by punish I don't mean slaps on the wrist that simply get handwaved as the cost of doing business. I mean fines that start at the "damn our yearly profits are harshly affected" level and can reach as far as "holy shit we're actually bankrupt and have to close down" level. Where the threat of not doing these measures and enforcing the law is so unprofitable that the costs of doing business become making the platforms safe.

Age verification is the worst of all worlds. It doesn't protect kids and simply compromises the safety of everyone involved while giving corporations even more profit (because trust me they'd all love for the excuse to collect that sensitive data and store it illegally for their databanks.)

I feel like we should make a social media ecosystem for under 18s only . Idk how to pull it off tho
