The complaints against AI are perfectly valid and that is before you get into the hundreds of millions to billions of gallons of fresh water the technology is using/will use.

We're literally going to thirst ourselves out of viability as a species to make this technology feasible

as opposed to the other dozens of industries depleting water resources. there's a million things that are actively killing this planet and human kind but AI is more evil for some reason despite the fact that it's benefiting a lot of things. i mean the use of it in medicine alone outweighs any sort of downsides to it

i'm not denouncing whatever downsides AI as a technology has, i'm saying that it is disproportionately criticized while its benefits majorly outweigh its deficits. the anti AI rhetoric online is banal and as i said previously, uninformed and petulant

I think it can be useful in the science and medical fields, and as a creative tool.

On the other hand, everything AI learns it learns from humans, so it will adopt all our worse attributes ...and if AI somehow doesn't adopt them too, the people with those worse attributes will program them in like China and Musk have.

I think the discriminative side of things is pitifully underutilized and could do seriously incredible things that humans can't/don't because it's way beyond practicality. For example, we'd be able to do exhaustive searches we've never dreamed of.

The resource usage is interesting.
We have the tech to have large amounts of "free" power and can also do closed system water cooling right?
Like, the tech to make it sustainable exists, we just don't utilize it.

If data centers were being made utilizing solar, batteries, geothermal, hydryo, etc. wouldn't we then be fine with it?
So AI isn't so much the issue as much as how we're not forcing how companies build the infrastructure.
But then again, if companies don't utilize these techniques to make it sustainable, I understand that "AI" is essentially bad in the energy resource area.

It has plenty of practical uses and utilities. The problem is this stupid rush to be the front-runner, shoving it into every facet of life when it's nowhere near ready, and putting it in places we'll never need it.

Btw I wish I had zero interest in AI, but unfortunately I work in software development and its literally what all our clients are excited about right now

I figure things like tedious administrative minutae or model testing are good uses for AI.

Things like image generation and chatgpt can fuck all the way off.

C. I can see how helpful it can be as a supplement, but the predominant usage of it ranges from pointless to infuriating.

If it gets fully implemented and replaces humans it will be the downfall of humanity, not in a Skynet sense, but in a Great Depression sense.

We already have more people than jobs available.

Where are those million or so workers at Amazon going to go once their warehouses are fully automated?

AI is to any information system what glue is to furniture... at some point you need to source and include "solid materials" or the end result will fail shortly after anyone tries to use it.

C, the type of folks who push it here only enforce that.

D: I think it's unfortunate how readily available it is for evil purposes and how easily it can be used by a lot of idiots who don't know what toys they're playing with and how destructive it can ultimately become. But I also recognize that there are a lot of fields that could make major advancements with this tech if only those in charge get their head out of their ass and stop trying to use it a means to replace workers they don't respect.
