It was a mess but I've always loved it. It has some great themes, it's very atmospheric and almost every single track on the OST is at *least* good. I also absolutely love the buildup to the CT connections. I always thought they did a great job there.

It was amazing despite the fact that clearly they had ideas that some bigwigs at Squeenix wouldn't let them do for fear it would sully the legacy of Chrono Trigger.

Fuckers, it's a sequel to a game about time travel and alternate universes. Let them do what they want and if you don't love it for another potential game in the Chrono universe, ignore the shit out of it.

Yes. Pretty much all of the hate it gets hinges on the person in question not liking that it isn't Chrono Trigger 2 rather than anything about the game itself.

The story was awful, especially with regard to the fates of the CT crew. The battle system wasn't bad, especially with how it tied into the true ending.

I mean... weird furry thundercats reject and mime harley quinn knockoff aside, it actually was still a well produced game, with some gorgeous graphics, good soundtrack, and I didn't even mind the gameplay that much, weird system that it was.

I still can't get over the weird decision to have 40+ garbage party members though, not that it matters because realistically you can only switch out one in your meager party of only 3 (what a stupid decision to have multiple party members) since you kinda always need to have protagonist and Kid in your party.

Didn't care for the incomprehensible story, it was so weird that I didn't really have time to register getting angry at that weird fever dream section with the old crew and such. I was just like... "um okay?"

Its a beautiful mess.

You can tell the devs loved it. It has a ton of effort and artistry behind it. The mechanics work, the art is solid, the OST amazing. The story is good too, on paper. i even dig the ties into CT. I can even treat them as two separate games, and on its own, it is a fun journey.

The abundance of characters is kind of weak. So many of them are boring, too many of them are cool, yet do nothing. I think the main party is intended to be Serge, Kid, Guile, Glenn, and Starky, Fargo, and Poshul (she is in a lot of promo art and is the only one who recognizes Serge after the transformation ). and Harle. But you know how it worked out.

I also think after the intro and up until the transformation, the game drags. Termina and Viper Manor are really boring sequences that may as well be sewer dungeons. There are bits and poeces of cool character moments, but it just drags.

Still, I love it, because the pieces, while jagged and warped, still fit and make a beautiful picture.

It was flawed but very creative and had a lot of heart to it; it's worth playing and the whole is better than the sum of its parts.

On the other hand, it shits all over the plot of the original game and is generally a terrible sequel. This is different from its intrinsic good qualities. The long and short is the creator for it had made a text game called Radical Dreamers and sort of pasted it over all the Chrono Trigger stuff like Poochie. It feels like a spiritual sequel to that more than Chrono Trigger imo.

Im actually fine with how they treated the CT characters. For me, it made things seem dire, and like we were up against something really vile. It definitely drove me to want to fix everything.

Sometimes bad things happen because of our choices. The game definitely threw a gut punch, but it was a skilled one. The entire game is about consequences of actions. Knowing that you had a part in it, simply by existing, makes you feel weird and helpless. But how good does it feel to fight back and try to help everyone too?

I feel like if you understand the levity and the stakes, then it doesnt feel cheap. Yes, it was dark, but its a story. Stuff happens. Chrino and crew arent immortal, or even really strong at all. They are mostly all normal dudes who know some kind of generic magic, minus Magus and Robo.

Story was pretty much non-existent until you get lore dumped at the end. This would be fine on its own as CT's story was also weak but the episodes were at least interesting to play through. The episodes in CC weren't that interesting after the manor.

The other problem I had with the story is that all this nonsense around the frozen flame and Chronopolis, seems less interesting than whatever is going on with the Porre military. Dalton surviving and turning Porre into a military power seems like an even more interesting story and it was never even really explored.

The gameplay is what I found most disappointing though as all the characters felt very samey. Karsh felt like Glenn who who felt like Leah etc. For a character like Pip, who did have a flavor of uniqueness about him, he was bugged and getting him to change forms was practically impossible.

I agree with the unexplored aspect of the story being more interesting, but when square did make a jrpg with political intrigue in ff 12, certain types of gamers hated it (I'm not saying 12 did it well, but damn if I wasn't hyped for just the concept of political intrigue, and years before pop culture consumed GoT to boot)

Also Jrpgs had a bad habit of lore dumping/plot dumping in the 3rd disc (or 3rd act as it were) so I usually wouldn't blame it, but yeah this one just wasn't interesting either way. They also made dragons... kinda lame if I'm being honest.

I say all this as someone who never really had the obsessive love for CT that everyone else did, since I was more into FF 6 (game with really engaging story and characters vs game with very interesting concepts, almost revolutionary at the time gameplay system, but quite frankly not much story and nothing burger characters, which I blame the DQ side of the so-called "dream team" for)

The only kinda lore exposition I've ever liked was in Xenoblade 1, thought I don't know if it applies, I feel like there's a difference between a lore dump and a plot twist. For example in Xenoblade for me the mechonis core scene is still one of my most shocking "holy crap!" moments in all rpgs, I was completely floored by that reveal. So much was revealed but it was done in such an engaging way, I was glued to the screen the entire time. But I guess that's really the only example I can think of, I usually just go with the flow for most rpgs.

Lore dumping feels more of a ps1 rpgs trait, for better or worse (mostly worse)

I considered it pretty great at the time, but it has a lot of issues. Awesome soundtrack, great atmosphere, and pretty good gameplay... but the story really is a mess. Some interesting sci-fi ideas, but the pacing was bad, only about 3 of the 44 playable characters had any development after they join, and it basically was to Chrono Trigger what the The Last Jedi was to the OT (yes, some may consider that a positive).

I'd still probably give it an 8/10 for the positives, though. And if anyone says I shouldn't criticize messy story games due to my username... I think it has way more issues than Xenogears, and that's not a nostalgia thing, since I played them at the same time with high expectations for both.

Xenogears annoys me in that I was all ready to get absorbed into this game, but then the end credits said "episode 5" and I was like what is this nonsense, make one complete game first then do weird episodes back and forth. Still unsure if they actually had a complete idea for the story or just concepts that they threw around.

But boy was I pleasantly surprised how much I liked that game. I don't care for robots so was worried about not being into this game and robo battling, but something about the game just worked. Especially the first disc.

Also why I liked Xenoblade, because it felt like they finally got it right after getting cut short with xenogears and the lolfest that was xenosaga. Was worth playing all the Xenos before it just to experience it.

Some have said it was an attempt make the scale feel even larger, though it also might just be because of Perfect Works, with episodes 2-4 being the previous incarnations. There was some thought 1 was going to be Xenosaga, obviously because of both the name and subtitle, but that it seemed to be more a spiritual successor, probably for legal reasons.

Soundtrack is great. Ive not played it because most of the things I hear about it dont appeal to me.

For example, I like to grind and in CC you cant. In fact, it sounds like the way they set the game up made every non-boss fight completely pointless.

I always hate 3-character parties, but why the fuck would you have a Suikoden-sized cast with a 3 character party? It also sounds like they did a piss poor job compared to Suikoden character wise.

The story is reputedly crap (many people are even saying so in this thread).

Just seems like Im better off listening to the soundtrack.

I still think Xenosaga is better than XB1. Speaking of nothing burger characters, XB1 is full of them. Every single character in Saga was infinitely more interesting to me.
