Wish I could give this a 0 because I work with kids/teens and have had to hear an exhausting amount about it, but I have not played it.

Going to bat for FNaF a little, I think at the time, this was a jolt survival horror needed. It stripped the genre to its basest form, and could be genuinely unsettling as you were stuck in place while these uncanny beings tested your reflexes and power management. It was dark & psychological, focused on the dread of waiting, of being watched, and of knowing you could be punished at any instant. Most if not all of this has been lost in the endless and cheapening sequels, but the first game still has a lot going for it.

Agree with what Snake said. It's when it got popular and they tried to flesh out the story into something other than "there's creepy animatronics trying to kill you" that the series became insufferable.

First game was serviceable, then Scott leaned into the fan/social media engagement and grifted hard to release three sequels in one year while feeding the fandom lore drops to keep them talking about the series. Then all the other stuff came out and the franchise lost what made the first game worked to begin with.

I think the gameplay peaked at the sequel and the games should have stopped after pizzeria (6th game) and they had wrapped up everything

Seen enough youtubes that it's probably a low rating if I'd played it but I won't LMS here

I've never played it myself so I also won't rate it but I've watched enough to know that I don't care for it, the first one gets the slight benefit of being something new but it still basically just works off of cheap jumpscares primarily which is lame. And of course as it became this oversaturated big franchise it just got even worse.

I think saying FNAF1 relies on cheap jumpscares does the game a bit of a disservice. I know the series has become pretty laughable and has long outstayed its welcome, which has understandably brought it a lot of ire, but I dont think the first few games deserve that.

I cant stand random, out-of-nowhere jumpscares in games (looking at you, Alan Wake 2), but in FNAF, the jumpscares are a direct consequence of your own mistakes. If you slip up, you get jumpscared. Its not necessarily cheap, its the payoff for the tension the game builds as you try not to let it happen. You know its coming if you mess up, and thats what makes it so unnerving.

I don't necessarily agree still but I can respect that view on it
