I find it funny that so many people really thought it was gonna be great because shes been working on it for 10 years. Shes 22, meaning she started it when she was 12. That doesnt exactly instill confidence lol

Good on her for being so passionate and seeing the project get finished.
That doesn't excuse the project from any criticism though. If it's bad, it's bad.

Apparently editors told her not to publish it and she ignored them and did it anyway.

Ready Player One shouldn't even be considered a book. It's just a guy listing intellectual property he enjoys.

I ain't gonna make fun of someone for working hard and releasing a book that meant a lot to them.

Feels like people who never had the balls to make anything themselves are being dicks here.

Yeah, from what I understand Spielberg took the book and made it halfway decent with the movie. The book is just like 2-3 references to some bullshit every page with the same story. Just hitting you in the face with references constantly.

I also think the backlash wouldnt have been as bad if she hadnt so grossly oversold herself. The way she talks about herself is very self centered and you can tell she has an ego. I dont think thats too uncommon for young creatives though

Hopefully this will be a humbling experience for her that will allow her to grow and further develop her craft. Maybe shell make something good some day

We tell creatives they have to get out there, sell themselves, be strong....but then we decide this is bad and they're egotistical if it doesn't hit a shifting, undefined standard. A lot of creatives (Especially men) are very full of themselves too and it doesn't matter or their product lands.

I get what youre saying. I think theres a balance to it. You need to have confidence in your work. Thats true. But you cant go too far or else youll come off as an arrogant jerk. This is just my opinion, and obviously I dont know her personally, but just based on what Ive seen she does come off as a bit of a jerk

Good marketing by her. There are probably a million novels that get published a year and most don't get nearly the attention (if any at all).
