So basically the too long didnt watch: girl named Audra Winter advertised this new fantasy world called Gardian that shed been working on for 10 years. She hyped up the first book, Age of Scorpius, and made it sound like it was gonna be the next GoT or some shit. She talked about herself like she was a savant because she has over 10,000 hours of writing experience.

Anyway the book came out and it was complete shit. But it wasnt just bad, it was borderline unreadable. Apparently editors told her not to publish it and she ignored them and did it anyway.

I thought Booktok referred to advertising for books that already existed. I hadn't actually heard of someone advertising their own work, though tbf I don't Tiktok at all.

I would too if I put 10 years of effort into it.

If it sucks, it sucks. If even one person ends up enjoying it, it's not wasted effort. Not every book is made for everyone. The alternative is to not release it, never knowing how it would've been received, and realizing that you wasted 10 years of your life on it for no reason.

It's like Sonichu except instead of a Millennial who never let go of childhood cartoons/games it's a Zoomer who never let go of dystopian YAF slop. You have a delusional person who's not that creative or skilled who insists that random shit they've been daydreaming about since they were a kid should be treated as the next big cultural phenomenon, and all of their creativity is either derived from the work of other people or from media they enjoyed as a child.

Yeah, from what I understand Spielberg took the book and made it halfway decent with the movie. The book is just like 2-3 references to some bullshit every page with the same story. Just hitting you in the face with references constantly.

Not the same. Eye of Argon was written by a kid and has been kinda unfairly dragged into the spotlight so much. a lot of people wouldn't like their scribbles from like age 13 to be public.

Ready Player One is bad on every level and was written by an adult man, professionally edited, proofed, etc. The plot is terrible. The characters are wretched. The hero is a creep stalker, the message is awful...like the film took the stance of "living in the past too much is bad, you need to look forward and live life, too." This was a change

Keep in mind the hero literally cyberstalks his girlfriend after she breaks up with him. Multiple times. Not only that, he abuses his real life job to spy on her in real life

I also think the backlash wouldnt have been as bad if she hadnt so grossly oversold herself. The way she talks about herself is very self centered and you can tell she has an ego. I dont think thats too uncommon for young creatives though

Hopefully this will be a humbling experience for her that will allow her to grow and further develop her craft. Maybe shell make something good some day

See, I don't like this at all.

"They have an ego" is very much something without any fixed meaning. We tell creatives they have to get out there, sell themselves, be strong....but then we decide this is bad and they're egotistical if it doesn't hit a shifting, undefined standard. A lot of creatives (Especially men) are very full of themselves too and it doesn't matter or their product lands.

But she's doing nothing that others don't.

I get what youre saying. I think theres a balance to it. You need to have confidence in your work. Thats true. But you cant go too far or else youll come off as an arrogant jerk. This is just my opinion, and obviously I dont know her personally, but just based on what Ive seen she does come off as a bit of a jerk

Looks like she was trying to be the next Brandon Sanderson with all the branding and the massive team of people and the focus on building a multimedia company around her work, but forgot he started from nothing and only found success after people read and loved his work.

Apparently the book isn't just bad, but it's not even edited. Folks are mad because they were sold something they did not receive. Stuff like run-on sentences, repetition, and even spelling errors.

Spotting unchecked ego is basic common sense.

Look at John Cena vs The Rock for example.

Someone very full of themselves is a very unappealing trait. I personally do not fuck with anyone that has a big ego.

This seems to be a step beyond just a normal launch from some cursory glances at people talking about it, like some big pre-order campaign, insane hype, etc. This feels more akin to a massive hyped Kickstarter going to absolute shit despite promises, more than some rookie author just overhyping herself and failing.

I agree with this. I'm just saying it's a shifting standard and a very fickle one where it's hard to know where the line is or how you come across.

In this case, didn she screw up? Yeah, probably. But is it also an attempt to promote oneself as people are expected to do? Also yes

I also agree with the graphic novel idea. She seems to have a passion for art and her world might better lend itself to that medium. I dont want her to abandon it altogether. I think with some revisions and a willingness to actually listen to advice she could make something pretty decent.

Theres a lot more to the situation than somebody releasing a poorly written book

Id compare it closest to a misleading kickstarter campaign headed by someone who is completely unable to take criticism.

Is it groundbreaking news? No. But the book being absurdly bad is only like half the situation
