We can't even drill deeper than 0.2% of the earth

But somehow we're going to take drilling equipment to mars and reshape it and then turn the solar system into a dyson sphere so that we can power chatgpt

fuck

Tbf, it's a fascinating concept. Might be outside what we're capable of right now, but it's fun food for thought.

Sci-Fi authors in the 50s loved it too. Don't attach it to Tech Bros.

Can we not demonize a concept just because there are assholes infatuated with it? We should, eventually, figure out the good bits of scifi. We should want to explore space.

edit: To be clear, I'm not saying you guys are necessarily doing it, I just hate when an otherwise innocuous subject becomes hated by proxy.

TechBros are obsessed with making sci-fi real.

They also tend to act like the villains of the sci-fi novels.

Why the obsession mars? Their utopia would not last as long they think it would, just getting there would be a deathtrip more than likely.

Society is a little too fucked for that stuff to be anything but a pipedream. Techbros look at all that stuff as a possible escape/salvation for themselves, refusing to acknowledge that the inevitable dystopia is largely their fault.

I suspect they think slave labor is going to be the magic bullet that's going to fix this, hence society seemingly being forced to go backwards.

Techbros love stuff like terraforming, because its some cool future-tech that makes you sound smart and nobody ever really pushes any further about any of it to realize you have no ****ing idea what you're talking about. It's just the evolution of the 15 year old who insists he's smarter than all his classmates because they don't care about quantum physics. This kid doesn't know math though, he just likes throwing out big words to sound important.

Or the other reason, is that a lot of these tech bros are delusional nut jobs who think because they can get ChatGPT to make them a website they should be kings of the world. So some guy like Elon Musk wants to take a bunch of people to Terraform Mars, when in reality its just Musk wants to be a king, and rule a bunch of slaves somewhere like Mars where they can't escape.

Funny you mention that.

I played the heck out of that game, and have terraformed every type of planet that wasn't a gas giant.

Of course, the concept isn't as simply achievable as in that game in actuality.

Didn't stop me from imagining how cool it would be if we could just drain Venus's lethal atmosphere like that.

They don't actually care about space travel or interplanetary colonization. They use optimistic sci-fi pipe dreams to hide the fact that it's a planned race to see who could competently mine asteroids first.

If they can fool themselves into thinking they can just make new worlds, they can feel better about fucking up the one we're all on at the moment.

Fix the fucking earth first. It's cheaper, easier, and actually achieveable in a reasonable time span. Then you can go do the space stuff.

"Hmm, that sounds exactly like Acol"

Still watching her eh? I think she had another video where she pointed out that any successful mars mission would almost certain begin by establishing a moon colony. It has all the same challenges (thin or nonexistent atmoshphere, no magnetosphere to speak of, constantly bombarded by big rocks, cold) but if successful would allow for a critical refueling station for exploration beyond earth's SOI. It also wouldn't take literal years to respond to any crises that come up, so anyone genuinely serious about interplanetary colonization plans needs to present a crystal clear plan to start with the moon. Anyone who doesn't start with the moon is grifting or pumping trying to pump their stocks.

We can't even fix our own planet that already has life in the habitable zone. Maybe they should work on that before thinking about desperation moves like terraforming Mars. We still have a few billion years before the sun eats us.

Mars has slightly lighter gravity than earth and a thin atmosphere (meaning less air resistance). You would need considerably less dv for the return trip. It wouldn't be anymore complicated than getting somewhere there in the first place. Provided you've solved all other food and storage concerns. The main problem here is purely logistical. Building a rocket that could take someone to mars and back is somewhat trivial. It might even be easier than sending rovers because the pilot could make real-time adjustments instead of the like, 30 minute delay the rover rockets have.

The problem is keeping a human alive for the duration. When you get into space the weight of the vessel matters a lot less. But the weight of the vessel does affect how much fuel is needed to push the craft around and how fast you can accelerate. Making a ship that has several years worth of food and water is...not tenable. I'm mean it's probably possible but it's just such an absurd expenditure nobody would do it. Also iirc humans can't survive in space that long. Our bones and eyeballs and stuff start going weird.

This is AColier's main point. If they're so confident they can terraform mars, they should terraform earth. To not have global warming.
