Just wanted to make this topic now so I can be bewildered by the fact that the difference between who runs our country might come down to a mere 10000 votes.

After so long, and so much handwringing, this would be an even worse move for the Republicans politically than coming together and conceding some ground to the Dems on the bill.

From the standpoint that they could have done this weeks ago, yes.

But...aren't the Rs going to be in the majority in the Senate for quite a while? They could do a lot of damage with simple majority votes.

Short term removing the filibuster would let them do a lot of damage, yeah, but long term I think it would not be to their benefit. They had already basically carved out so many exceptions to the filibuster that it was possible for them to achieve their goals by shoving it into reconciliation which gets around the filibuster.

Would mean Dems winning the House in the midterms would be even more critical though because it would let them kill their batshit policies there.

But also, IIRC Trump was calling for Republicans to kill the filibuster in his first term when they had a trifecta and they refused then but idk if Thune will be willing to hold the line there like McConnell did.

Right, but the trade-off is that doing really unpopular things could turn voters against the GOP. The filibuster lets them avoid dealing with controversial issues while telling their base it's all the Democrats' fault. Without it, they either have to pass crazy things and piss off normie voters or admit to their base that they actually don't care about any of the culture war stuff. Either option could cost them a lot of support.

There's a reason they haven't done it even though they could have on day 1 of the shutdown.

In the long run it'd fuck them hard. They know this. I actually think there's a good chance Thune refuses, which is probably going to put him in Trump's sights.

So if Thune refuses to end the filibuster, he pretty much has to cave to the Democrats, right? Because Trump will go nuclear on him if the shutdown keeps dragging on into November, right?

They've been put into a bind. There's nothing they can do that will actually result in them not taking the most heat for the SNAP loss and increased premiums. Every week the shutdown goes on sees Rs getting more blame in polling and losing popularity. Meanwhile Dem popularity actually seems to be going up in some places as this drags on. Trump himself has just fallen to his lowest approval of either term (which is probably why he's freaking out about it now).

I think they just 100% thought Schumer would have caved by now and didn't have a plan if he didn't. After screaming about how they don't "control all of government" for a month now, if they do nuke it, it just suddenly becomes obvious they do and the blame falls on them even more.

If the modern Congress will never again negotiate to break filibusters, which seems like the case, then ending the filibuster is the only real option. It was beneficial to the extent it forced negotiation, but that's dead now. It doesn't really matter who ends the filibuster, it will fuck both parties over in the long term. But in the short term it probably hurts Rs much more.

That would just put all of Trumps ire squarely on Johnson.

I still think the Democrats will cave, because unfortunately enough of them caring if people starve or not gives the GOP the leverage.

I don't think normal people pay nearly as much attention to politics as you guys seem to think. I'd venture that 90% of people don't know what the filibuster is. And should it be nuked, and the Rs passed a bunch of shitty policies, those R voters would still blame the Ds anyway.

Yeah, it definitely could/would cause a lot of short-term suffering for people so I get being queasy about it. I can't completely just give a thumbs-up to that just because (a) I'd probably be less affected than some others and (b) I think it would eventually allow Dems to pass good policy later... maybe.

But the Republicans have willingly drove the car off the cliff here. They're choosing a path that requires them needing Democratic votes and yet they refuse to negotiate or compromise at all... and like... fuck that. If you're going to pursue a path where you need the votes from the opposition you generally have to, you know, compromise with them. If they're unwilling to do that then they shouldn't have chosen the path that needed their votes and instead picked the path that lets them do it all by themselves since they control every branch of the government and are perfectly capable of doing so with no Democratic votes if they so choose. But they want to keep their obstruction tool for down the line AND get everything they want (and I guess "own the libs") so like... this is their mess 100%.

We shouldn't really entertain this talk because it is plainly and blatantly unconstitutional and so it would be less "making it legal" and more "ripping up the Constitution in a way that even normies couldn't spin away" but they've (Republicans) already considered that and talked about trying to make it so that if you serve two consecutive terms you're still barred (so no Obama) but because Trump's were non-consecutive it's a-ok.

Kind of incredible that the move Republicans seem to be making now is to claim SNAP is actually bad.

I don't think there's a single worse talking point for their base you could possibly try to pivot too.

There are already plenty of Rs who think SNAP is bad because they believe it is just so easy to get and abuse that millions of illegals and others who can actually work, but wont are on it.

Does Walmart go under if there's no more snap? They've made it their entire business model to have the government subsidize employee wages (and then get most of that money back when they buy food too)

If I had to make an (admittedly small) wager, I'd say if Dems overperform on their already seemingly high expectations for Tuesday, we could see Reps finally cave. A direct electoral defeat is hard to ignore.

Like, if Jay Jones of all people actually wins (which despite him losing in the polls is not that unlikely given ticket splitting is probably not actually going to be severe and Spanberger looks to be running away with it), there's going to have to be some real soul searching.

I don't think Jones pulls that race out. It's absolutely insane given that Republicans say worse than what Jones said repeatedly on a daily basis but I think Virginia will fall under the old New England/Mid-Atlantic tradition where voters love to ticket split and vote for Republicans at random times to seem enlightened (Scott Brown, Logan, hell Giuliani if you go back enough, etc.)

East Coast from VA up has this kind of ingrained brainrot where "oh our Republicans aren't as crazy as the national ones so it's okay to put a check on Dems" thrives to this day.

But if he does that will definitely sting for the GOP given they've tried to make the VA races 110% about him. Unfortunately, Jones kind of has to win if VA wants to be able to redistrict to join the states trying to counter Republican gerrymandering. AG seat is crucial in that regard because if a lawsuit is brought to challenge a redistricting the AG could just... not rep the state and I think that kills the effort.

When Johnson was asked he said "I don't know about that I've been busy" for the 183rd time lmao.

Also I missed this because....it didn't happen, but 62 Senators including 15 Rs, including some hardcore MAGAs, tried to pass a SNAP funding bill yesterday, but Thune pulled a Johnson and sent everyone home because he didn't want to vote on it.

This is all true and it's definitely an uphill battle, but I think it's still a decent possibility. Exit polling of early voters yesterday went 62/38 for Jones, and early voting is not AS cleanly partisan as it used to be.

New theory: Mike Johnson's plan is to keep the House out of session long enough that (assuming the shutdown continues) the air travel system completely collapses, making it literally impossible for the House to meet again. Then the Senate (who is still in DC most of the time) has no way to end the shutdown other than passing the House plan.

Damn! I had remotely login today so that I didn't lose network access and to view a 2nd furlough notice (each one is basically only good for 30 days). The longer this goes, the worse it's going to be when we go back in. I basically haven't thought about work at all in a month.
