My parents would let us walk, but either walk with us or follow close behind in the car so that we were never out of sight.

I think if I had kids, I'd do the trunk or treat thing with them.

in my kid years... allowed to go on own around 5th grade (it's a small town) not really a risk of bad people plus safety in numbers.

only remember one year which my dad helped with the trick or treating (age of 5 i think) got to go to a halloween party in the apartment complex. didn't get a goodie bag.

It's interesting that while grandparents are always like "we let our kids wander around all night and we'd just open the door and yell and they'd come back" as if it's evidence that the world was a safer place for kids, the present world is actually safer for kids by the numbers.

But I'm still not risking it. My kids go nowhere without mama or me, and won't for several more years.

When my kids went, wed usually meet up with some parents from their class & the kids would go together. Us parents would hang back as the kids went house to house.

Whats nice about the trunk or treat things is its earlier in the month. Today we have record setting winds and some rain. Gonna be interesting with two kiddos.

But yeah times have changed. I was allowed to go out without supervision by like the 3rd grade.

it's a 50/50 coin flip every year if it rains on halloween. this time it's going to possibly rain. trick or treaters don't come around here they usually go up the hill and do the trunk or treating deal.

I walk with the younger ones. The oldest since 5th grade goes with friends without us.

We went on our own starting from like 1st grade

Edit: oh yeah, my sisters are 3 and 2 years older than me. I probably started going with fiends around 3rd grade

I live in Chicago, but grew up literally a block away from a fairly major park, and Catholic parish

I never went alone, but only because my home was fairly remote and I needed rides.

If I lived in a suburban area, I'm sure they wouldn't have had too much of a problem with it.

It rained last year.

We had to take younger Little Devsman home because he was screaming bloody murder.

Presumably, my mom in 1984 would have just let a two year old roll around on the ground in the rain. Maybe she would have even laughed at him. What a role model.
