Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.s Rockstar Games fired dozens of employees in a move that a British trade union said was designed to prevent the workers from unionizing. The company said they were fired for misconduct. The Grand Theft Auto maker terminated between 30 and 40 staffers across multiple offices in the UK and Canada on Thursday, according to a spokesperson for the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB). All of the employees were part of a private trade union chat group on Discord and were either members of the union or attempting to organize at the company, the union spokesperson said.

Rockstar has just carried out one of the most blatant and ruthless acts of union busting in the history of the games industry, Alex Marshall, president of the IWGB, said in a statement. This flagrant contempt for the law and for the lives of the workers who bring in their billions is an insult to their fans and the global industry. Alan Lewis, a spokesman for Take-Two, said the firings were for gross misconduct, and for no other reason and that we fully support Rockstars ambitions and approach.

Rockstar has doubled down on security following a massive leak in 2022 that released dozens of videos of unfinished footage from the companys next game, Grand Theft Auto VI. In early 2024, the company was criticized by the union for asking workers to return to the office five days a week. Rockstar said the return to office decision was partly for security reasons. Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on May 26, 2026 and is expected to be one of the top-selling video games of all time.

ive been playing gta5 online and i like it way more than the single-player story.

ill still play gta6, but not if they make me scan my id or w/e.

i dont really give a shit about the single-player part, tbh, im only in it for the multiplayer.

I'll probably get GTA6 eventually but not until it's not only on Steam but also HEAVILY discounted.

I rarely even come close to finishing GTA games, I basically get to the point where the open world is available mostly in full to me and then I just spend my time fucking around. I also do not do GTA Online.

Course this could potentially just make me not bother at all, we'll see, it'll be a number of years before I even consider buying it anyways.

The thing with me though is that I've played all the past GTA games going back to GTA 3. I've probably put in over hundreds of hours just goofing around when I was a kid, and doing everything I could possibly do in those games, as well as using all the cheat codes. All these Grand Theft Auto games kinda just blend together, and these sandbox type of games, just don't interest me as much.

I'm nowadays, mostly just going from one main/side quest to the next in these types of games. Like I'm doing with Cyberpunk 2077. There has to be something like an interesting story, feature, or whatever, that hooks me into playing a new game. I don't have a PSN subscription to play online.

I'm just in a wait and see mood for the game. Wait to see when the game comes out. Read the reviews, find out a little about the story, and what all it features, then go from there. The game's setting, which is modern day Florida, doesn't seem to be all that appealing to me.

I'm also kinda wary of it being another hyper-realistic, and slower paced game, like Rockstar's other title Red Dead Redemption 2. Which I liked the game a lot at times, but man it felt like a grind at times and I wished it was bit more video-gamey.

I don't know what the laws are in the UK but I imagine it's harder pull something like this over there than it is in the US, so maybe they can prove whatever misconduct that they allege.

but fuck Rockstar in any case

Firing someone for being in a union is illegal here, so if what the IWGB says is true, this could end up being very embarrassing and expensive for Rockstar.

I always thought the main reason that Red Dead Redemption 2 lost Game of the Year to God of War was because of that report of the way Rockstar treated their employees. It would be hilarious if it happened AGAIN.
