And I know why. My parents cooked it well done. That changed when I tried cooking it medium rare. What a world in difference.

Same. Used to rely heavily on A1 sauce and now it's been over a decade since the last time I bought it.

I think that applies to a lot of people of our generation. Our parents cooked the shit out of everything.

I think I was in my late teens when I first tried a medium rare steak and it was amazing. I never understood the appeal of steak before that but I also didn't know that there were different ways that you could cook it.

My dad always cooked steak well done so I just assumed that was how steak always was.

I had steak at a friend's and it was my first experience with well-done.

It was like warm beef jerky.

Yes, and my parents would do things like use wonder bread instead of hot dog buns. When I grew up I started liking food a lot more.

I've had that same experience. Well done steak that was dry and tough to chew, I wondered why anyone liked it.

That first bite of a properly cooked medium rare changed my life.

Same. Even prime rib was cooked until it was brown all the way through.

Also hated hamburgers. Because my mom ground it herself but put bread in it. Stuff was nasty.

Yea same. Mom made it well done because she didn't want it "moo-ing" or whatever because she *still* thinks it's blood. I make my own now though so she can do w/e she wants

yup, same. my parents still to this day will not eat a steak unless there is absolutely no red or pink left on it. they say if it's got red or even pink still left, then it's not cooked fully.

Interesting how most of us grew up like this. I guess our parents' generation had a red meat scare or something.

before what, the 40s, any meat was suspect when bought from a grocer. a combination of poor refrigeration and Upton Sinclairs whole book about the meat industry i'd imagine anyone who grew up in that era or was a child of someone who did learned at a young age to fully cook your meat.

oh yeah, same on this too. all she would ever do was steam or boil them. when i discovered sauteing and roasting, it was a complete game changer.

fuck that, order a burger and soda. i refuse to drink, i've seen enough people in my life die because of over-consumption that i decided years ago i hate alcohol, so i dont give a damn if people think its childish to order a coke instead of a beer.

Literally only should be done with meatballs and the bread should be soaked in milk.

My dad is a boomer and my grandparents were silent generation and my all my aunts and uncles are Gen X as well as me and everyone I knew cooked steak properly and didn't overdo it unless it was their own personal steak and they liked it that way but I only knew a couple people like that. I really don't think this is as much a generational thing as it is just some people can't cook worth a shit. My family was excellent cooks. It helps my grandma cooked professionally her entire life and taught people well.

With that said as much as I like beef I'm not huge into steak. Like yeah it is good here and there but I only eat it a couple times a year where as I will eat ground beef multiple times a week all the time. I will almost always choose a hamburger over a steak.

Also for what it is worth I don't care if someone wants their steak well done or if they want to slather it in steak sauce of some sort. If someone prefers it that way I will make it that way for them. I'll char the shit out of it and hand them the ketchup bottle if that is what they want. People online gatekeep that shit way too hard. But I definitely want mine on the rare side with a puddle of myoglobin.

Naw, my family knew how to cook steak at least somewhat competently. On a related note I loved steak as a kid.
