It's the last desperate squeeze of the lemon, and a bit of a 'fuck you' to the fans.

yeah, it even hit elden ring eventually with nightreign. it used to be novel when it was busted out only every few years. now its so much and imo it undermines the franchises that it occurs in

It's cheaper and more lucrative to license IP out than to take the risk of creating an entirely new product with said IP

That's not really a media cross over thing, that's just Sony wanting a BR like game for Elden Ring and it's kinda fun. It's like you're doing Orange Justice with Wylder in a skin that looks like Bender from Futurama.

It's their own IP, I wouldn't call it media cross over even if they put out a DLC sometime soon with Bloodborne enemies in it.

i think there may be a misunderstanding here, because to me, a "crossover" is simply the meeting of two or more IPs. one company owning those IPs doesnt preclude it for me

like yeah, FromSoft created Dark Souls and owns Elden Ring. Theyre still distinct games/franchises

But I think OP is talking about Fortnite having Spiderman, Bob's Burgers, Naruto and Godzilla in the game as skins and shit like Call of Duty having Beavis and Butthead skins.

No. Cross overs are great and I want to see more and see more people being less overprotective of their IP.

ah that makes sense. i guess i naturally assume some sort of narrative or writing in a crossover, as opposed to just loaner characters

On the other hand some of the crossovers predictably keep using the same characters. That Ken was correctly used as the crossover character for City of the Wolves over Ryu was one of those times when the arrangement was done appropriately.

I've been bitching about this for like a decade at this point, yes I'm sick of it.

It would still happen before, like I remember the TMNT/Power Rangers crossover episodes. But Fortnite turned it into a business model.

that was a game with 56 characters, and in its cast included every series staple (including from the post-PS1 games), the trophy girls from the original game, a bunch of bosses made for a later racing game, a secret boss for a GBA spinoff, a character whose only appearances in the entire series were late-2000s mobile games, a character based on a widely-believed rumor of a cut character for the original CTR. The only crossover (besides some tiny customization from Activision's games for the Atari 2600 most people don't realize are even in the game) was with Spyro, the only series that had a long history of crossing over with Crash anyway, and even then there's only three Spyro characters. They had room to put in an iron checkpoint crate, and Rilla Roo in the game twice because the first time they put him in his appearance was widely mocked (the second version is literally called "Fixed Rilla Roo"). The number of named Crash characters not in that game is tiny.

If Nitro-Fueled were made today it would cut characters that were in the original CTR, add some Spyro guys and then add a never-ending number of random crossover characters incredibly divorced from Crash or Spyro

Depends on the context and how it's done, really.

Fortnite and MtG are examples of too much, IMO.

Stuff like Smash or like, Ken showing up in City of Wolves is fine.

smash is fine its built on cross overs and it keeps its self focused on strictly video game characters

and city of wolves has problems beyond ken (not that ken is a problem)

I'm not against the idea by itself, hell I'm even supportive of it. It just sucks that it feels like most are just using it as a crutch for either otherwise mediocre media or a last resort for clearly running out of ideas.

Granted, some people are resentful of non-Nintendo characters being in Smash. Cloud stands out. FF7 was a big point where mainline Final Fantasy games stopped being released on Nintendo consoles. And he is the Final Fantasy character that first got in. And also, way too many people were upset when most people under 30 had no idea who Terry was.

The novelty has worn off a bit, but I still highly enjoy cross-overs. A multiplayer game without it just isn't the same.

Neither cloud or sephiroth bother me. The shit that bothers me are stuff like ROB and G&W.

It's like scraping the bottom of the barrel to find non-characters when many other fan favorites are getting ignored but then they also find the time to get 7 fire emblem characters.

I like Fire Emblem so it doesn't bother me as much, but having say Awakening get all 3 main reps was a really bad choice...particularly when Chrom was added when he was the least popular of the 3.

And yeah, more varied weapon types would be great. Don't need so many sword users.

I love crossovers, and they are a thing I myself like to use in my own writings. But they are also something that takes work to do well, and a lot of things use them in a lazy way.

In general, I'm ok with crossovers if there's real meaning to it. I do agree it gets stupid when it's just characters in Fortnite or w/e.

Though it did for better or worse give us Captain N The Game Master (which did use Tetris for a couple episodes). Not good, but hilarious ride from start to end.

I can't think of any game I've played that featured a cross over. The only games I can think of that do this are micro transaction hell holes.
