I hate Monopoly. It goes on way too long and I don't think I ever played it through. When it comes to Board games with money, I prefer the game Life.

I think everyone hates monopoly because everyone makes up their own house rules that make the game go on for way to long. Supposedly the official rules make the game go way faster but I don't think anyone in the history of ever has read them and I aint ever going to read them either.

Mouse Trap because it is so disappointing. It looks so cool on TV but really you just get to the end then go round and round for 5 minutes

Most modern Eurogames with 10,000 pieces and a hundred page long rulebook.

Most party games that have a turn timer.

They're not wrong though. The entire point of the game as it was originally designed was supposed to annoy you, to basically teach a lesson that "unregulated capitalism bad".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Landlord%27s_Game

Though dedbus was also right that one of the things that makes Monopoly more annoying is because people add house rules (like putting money under Free Parking) that keep pumping money into the economy and prolong the game. If you follow most of the rules that are actually in the rules and avoid adding to it, it goes much faster.

Yeah, but people don't like losing so that's why you got the "Free Parking money" shit, which yes makes the game go on forever since nobody goes bankrupt

Well that, and nobody ever wants to trade/sell their properties, and nobody ever does auctions when they don't want/can't afford to buy the property they landed on

Players aren't being aggressive enough - exploit their weak play by conceding property for cash

EDIT: I rather loath Snakes'n'Ladders, you have no agency! There's no point in even being there. In a close second to that is Mousetrap which is exactly the same, but at least it puts on a show.

Monopoly is maybe my favorite boardgame (probably next to settlers of catan). In my house growing up, we only ever played strictly by the rules. One summer we used to play it every day and got so efficient at everything that games would last only half an hour.

Chinese Checkers is pretty easy to learn. Which is why it's a fun game for kids.

I used to love it when I was a wee sprout in the 80s. Though I never had a full six player game going - I think the most I ever managed was three.

Yeah, auctions are what I was thinking of when I said "follow most of the rules that are actually in the rules".

So many people don't like doing auctions, then wonder why the game is taking so long. Auctions are a huge part of speeding things up.

Though, with all the Monopoly talk, I feel like I need to post this here now:

You can make improvements to Candy Land. Start by giving players a hand of cards that they have to select from every turn, and then make adjustments to make the game more fair. But the hand of cards automatically adds an element of strategy to Candy Land

Guess Who? is bad because you can literally develop a set of questions to win every time. Unless they perfectly designed the characters which I doubt

The character demographics are pretty well thought out, however there is a dominant strategy that few people use that is explicitly permitted in the rules, and that's the use of compound questions.

For example, you can ask Does your person have a hat OR glasses; that eliminates a lot more than asking either individually and allows you to attack larger percentages.

Wtf so you could theoretically end the game with one question

Yeah thats bad

The real problem with Trivial Pursuit is that the game ages. If you play a 1935 version of Monopoly, it's going to be pretty much the same as the modern version. The 1949 version of Clue/Cluedo is not much different from the current one. But the questions in a 1981 copy of Trivial Pursuit would all be in the history category for kids today. Many of the science and geography questions are just plain wrong now.

"What is the largest country on Earth?" USSR

"What is the farthest planet from the Sun?" Pluto

"What is the capital of Yugoslavia?" Belgrade

"What is the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany?" Bonn

The other problem is that if you play it enough, you begin to memorize the answers, so the person who owns the game eventually gains an unfair advantage.

The auctions themselves are kinda tedious, but they actually speed up the game because the properties get sold quicker

I meant that sacking them off is what makes the game longer, in case that wasnt clear.

You have consider the year and adjust your answers to that, seems like a good intellectual goal to go for tbh

Its the same when you play an old Jeopardy video game
