im prob going to watch the origin OVAs next (i like the art and i want to see garma again....), but after that should I go straight to zeta, or try one of the newer series first? I've been wanting to watch witch from mercury for a while. There's honestly so much its kind of overwhelming

If you want to do more UC timeline stuff before Z, 8th MS Team and 0080: War in the Pocket are great and short. Then 0083.

I've been working through Gundam 79 myself and my plan once I finish it is to go into Zeta Gundam. Trying to stick relatively close to release order as I make my way through most of the franchise (only skipping the stuff that's truly optional like SD Gundam and maybe some of the more explicitly toy-focused ones. Currently undecided on G Gundam.)

I've seen Witch from Mercury. It's really good at parts and has some excellent animation, but I feel the story is poorly paced and the back half struggles from what feels like executive meddling or a lack of clear vision. I liked too many parts of it to just write it off completely, but it's a show that really needed like. 12 more episodes minimum to really hammer in some of its themes and flesh out some of the side characters more. Especially with how they react to real shit finally happening.

Personally TC, my recommendation is maybe stick with UC for the time being unless you get bored of it. Gundam Unicorn is apparently the peak of the series and it benefits strongly from having 0079, Zeta, ZZ, and Char's Counterattack under your belt first.

Zeta is probably peak for the main series so absolutely check that out. 08th MS Team and 0080 are the best side stories for UC. ZZ is unfortunately not very good, but Char's Counterattack is amazing. For the newer stuff Unicorn is quite good even if the story is whacky. Origin is kind of a weird one because the manga is a reinterpretation of the original story by the character designer but the anime tried to kind of make that story work alongside the actual original series instead of retconning. Speaking of retcons, the movie versions of 0079 are quite good. There's also the book, by the original director, which has some dramatic changes (such that the other series cannot continue from the book ending).
