I know nothing about this game other than it is a masterpiece of the Strand genre or something and might be scary sometimes.
And that falling over sucks?

it's a pretty straightforward game, but if you want things to be easier, contribute to structures you find and do extra deliveries to raise your relationship with people (gives you better weapons and equipment).

The tutorial area pretty much teaches you everything you need to know about the game mechanics.

The one big recommendation I have is to not get bogged down in the early game. They throw a lot at you that you can do but it's not entirely clear how things work and they're slow to give you the tools.

I suggest focusing on the main story missions until you get past Chapter 3. After that, you have a lot of the core tool varieties and won't feel as limited in how you can tackle things.

I would do mostly the main story up until you get vehicles. The game really opens up then and getting stuck in the early areas to try and 5 star is a bit of a trap since it gets way easier once you get to the 'main' game.

I still have this game in my backlog. I wanna get around to it someday, lol, but all the discussion I see about it confuses me. One player calls it a walking sim, another talks about boss fights?

This. You'll be unlocking new stuff to use and increasing your balance/carry weight often as you do the main deliveries, so I'd stick to that for a while.
