no. tailgating is illegal for a reason, its pretty much the biggest reason for car accidents on the road. if you do it you are the problem, if you do it thinking it'll make the person you're menacing speed up then you are a dumbass.

most common offender is some asshole driving a giant ass truck. my 'favorite' situation is some fucker in a lifted truck he uses for commutes to work hugging my ass with his high beams on.

i never go in the left lane, never feel comfortable going 90 when the speed limit is 65, but tailgaters are in every fucking lane.

I get people tailgating me when I go 5 above in my neighborhood where kids and pets constantly run in the street. I don't speed up or brake check em, but I do love making them slow down when I gotta whip into my driveway.

If the person in front of you is going slower than youd like, your speed is going to have to be the same regardless of whether you are 40 metres or 4 metres behind them.

The flow of traffic is set by the people in the front not the people behind you, so as long as you're not under the speed limit then no, you are not the problem

If we're talking about a highway situation, definitely. Left hogs are the most disruptive people to the flow of traffic, followed by people who will just literally go the same speed as the person in the lane next to them for way too long, followed by people who rush out into the left lane in front of a line of people going ten over and then proceed to go 1-5 over. If you're talking about a single lane road, only if the person in front is going below the speed limit in normal driving conditions. Speed limit or above is fair game in that case.

the simple truth is that 99% of the time if there is an accident because you were tailgating someone then you are going to be held legally responsible. you can argue all you want that the person in front of you wasn't going fast enough to satisfy you but that's not going to work in any court.

Drive the speed limit and stay in the right lane if not passing. If you're doing that then the tailgating is on them.

If you're below speed limit with no weather conditions, some people are gonna ride you to "remind"/"convince" you to speed up unfortunately

I bet if we all went the speed limit and gave the person in front of us appropriate space, there would be a lot less accidents on the road. Everyone needs to get to McDonald's a little quicker instead, though.

The image is simply if you're tailgated unprompted, the guy doing the tailgating is most likely an impatient asshole. If you have a line of people behind you, you're most likely to be a self centered asshole who has no idea how to manage yourself in traffic (assuming this is on the highway or otherwise the person in front is being disruptive in how they are navigating the road). It's not about the dangerousness of tailgating, which is its own thing.

Tailgating is immensely stupid and very dangerous. If someone's driving slow and there's no passing lane just be an adult and be patient, pass them when a chance opens up.

No. Multiple people tailgating each other behind you doesn't mean you're driving wrong, it means that everyone behind you is a fucking idiot.

I don't tailgate, but you are absolutely the problem if you're holding up traffic in the passing lane. How many people do you need to watch pass you on the right before you get out of the passing lane?

if this is the fast lane, I speed up a little, and if they're still tailgating I just shift out of the way. life's too short for drama on the road.

Looks like everyone is wrong because they're on the wrong side of the road (in US terms).

If you are in a passing lane on a highway, then yes, you are the problem.

If you are not on a highway, or on a highway with one lane, you are not the problem.

Just don't tailgate in general. In a very likely hood of any kind of accident, it's very easy to prove the person who drove behind you for tailgating, it is very rare to see someone get charged for "brake checking" in a case where the person behind them gets into a rear end accident because it's very hard to prove, they can easily just say that they were trying to slow down. As someone who lived in Los Angeles (where we have some of the fucking dumbest drivers around because everyone here is do damn aggressive) I have never once gotten into any form of car accident because I drive defensively and smartly. If someone does tailgate me for whatever reason I usually just give into them and if they continue to be an asshole I just pull over to avoid being a victim of road rage.

With that said, I no doubt have faced people who are super slow on the freeway/highway and clog up the left lane because they go under the flow of traffic speed. In that particular case, they are a problem. The road will definitely be a safer place if more people just give into the aggressive drivers because one way or another they will face the consequence of their actions.
