Battle theme #3
Big Blue
Shining Wizard(Long Version)

Chrono Cross -Scars of Time-: Uhhhhh its fine. Its weird for me to be underwhelmed by such a legendary song but thats how it is sometimes. There are parts of it that speak to me: the quiet bass in the intro, the choppy strings at 1:06, the cue at 2:04 that leads into the finale. Somehow, though, the song is less than the sum of its parts. I dont feel the emotional connection to it that it seems like I should. Again, its weird and I cant explain it! But thats Scars of Time for me.
Battle theme #3: Now this is a song that I connect with. This is prime SNES texture: angular, with a touch of grittiness in the lower channels. The melody is pretty straightforward for most of it, and not in a bad way - it has the driving force to make you keep fighting like a good battle theme should. The big finish at 1:16 is worth the wait, this is when the melody truly rises above the fray and says Its time to be a hero!
Big Blue: When I think of the Big Blue theme, what comes to mind is the thumping beat. This remix turns that on its head, deemphasizing the beat into something that feels weightless, or, more appropriately, frictionless. It still has a beat going, but the focus is really on the cluster of horns and guitars that, in contrast to the inflexible beat, all flow between each other. This results in a song thats going at nonstop full speed, that always seems to be swerving in a random direction which ends up being exactly where it wanted to be.
Moonlight Concert: Still love this. Something I dont think I mentioned last time is how at 1:24 it calms down, and even dies out at 1:53, which makes the return at 2:01 all the sweeter. The launch into the chorus at 2:31 sounds almost the same as it was before, but it feels different, like this time you have reason to celebrate your escape from the darkness.
Shining Wizard(Long Version): The quiet moments in this are breathtaking. 0:50, when you hear the piano rushing out from the silence, and the guitar slams down alongside it. 1:22, when the guitar melody cuts out and all the instruments sound like theyre breathlessly running alongside each other. And the huge buildups at 3:40 and 5:00. All those parts are so good that the main guitar melody seems almost pedestrian by comparison. Not that its bad, just that it doesnt fully measure up to the hype the quiet creates.
TIGAR (ALL PHASE MIX): Has a lot going against it. Its heavy thumping electronic which is already hit or miss for me, and the multiple phases make me even more disoriented. I can get into the Otto phase well enough theres a clear progression there from the first minutes turmoil to the serenity at 1:03 but then Kurt loses me. Even 2:51-3:12, which I like the sound of, feels like it has no tie to what comes before and after it. Then theres the leadup to the end that starts at 4:38, in which the same melody plays 3 times, growing stronger each time. Thats something I normally like a lot, but again, it kind of comes out of nowhere and doesnt fully land its emotional impact.
